Barcelo Corralejo Bay Solo First Timer

Hi am hitting the island on 15 Nov for 7 nights for a solo holiday after many years! Any other solos about this time fancy sharing a drink?

Would like to see some of the island and posts here have been v helpful - however any "must do's"?

Would also like to chill on beaches/pool, is it still warm enough to need sun cream?

Any replies gratefully received, TIA

G

If you ever burn, you will burn here if you aren't careful, believe me. We're less than 100km from Africa here and the sun is very powerful. The problem here (if you can call it a problem) is that the constant breeze makes you feel comfy and coolish so you don't feel as though there's a danger. Mind you, there's also a danger of hypothermia in most of the pools here - I don't know why, but it's a constant complaint. (The only one, normally!)

I would advise a visit to Betancuria for various reasons: there are some magnificent views on the way; it's incredibly green there, so totally different to many of the local places; there are museums, churches etc for a change from lazing; there's a goat farm (Finca Pepe) that's interesting and tasty to visit.

For beaches, you really must visit El Cotillo for its lagoons to the north. All the way up to the lighthouse and beyond there are lovely little bays, some sandy others rocky, where the reefs protect you from the big Atlantic waves. Perfect for snorkelling even if you aren't a great swimmer - there's often plenty to see in water that's only just round your knees.

Hello Bar, just off the main strip a couple of doors along from RIB, seems the place for singles to meet (without being a pick-up joint), but there are very many singles holidaying and living here so hopefully it won't be a problem. The place is known for its laid-back and open way of life and a very high percentage of holidaymakers make lasting friendships that bring them back here year after year.

Enjoy!

Hi Sheila

Many thanks for the recommendations. I don't burn easily but note your comments. Will try and factor in a few trips now too.

Ciao!

Hi Sheila

Forgot to ask, is there a decent bus service to get to the places you recommend?

Many thanks

The buses are very good, Glenn: punctual and cheap, and normally clean and modern. But they are often quite scarce so it pays to plan ahead. Here's the site with timetables, payment info etc: http://www.maxoratabus.com/tiadhe/en/

There are just two buses in Corralejo: the N°6 to Puerto del Rosario, and the N°8 to El Cotillo. From Puerto you can get to most other places on the island. As far as I can see, the service to Betancuria is not great - really meant for locals to get to work in Puerto.

If you plan to use the buses much, ask the driver for a "Bono". He'll hand you a plastic smart card. The card itself costs 2€, and you load it with 15€, 20€ or 25€ as you wish (not with a 50€ note). After that, on each bus you just give your destination and the number of passengers (you can use it for a whole group of people). You'll only be charged 70% of the fare! When credit gets low, just top it up. Bring it back next year, too! Not only do you save money, you save having to find change etc.

Having said that, to appreciate the island fully, a hire car is always going to be the best bet. Cheap to hire, cheap fuel (€1.10/litre for 95), easy roads, free parking...
