The smelly lagoon at Tryp is being "upgraded"

Just found this on the Tryp's FB page from Alberto, the General Manager:

That river is the lagoon, which actually is in process to be solved the smell problem with several works. But by now is in process, which is a great notice, because it took too many years!!!

Soon, all of you will be informed when it will be concluded

AWESOME news!!

I was there visiting on Thursday, you can still get a smell when you go by.

I sat near for about 1 hour and hardly noticed it was only when I walked by.

First of all, this is not a self-contained lagoon. This is part of a much larger waterway that connects the Blau and the other hotels in the area. When they built the Tryp, they ignored all recommendations that the hotel must have the connecting channels running freely. The area should have been raised, rather than adding soil and building upon it. The water goes to the sea at one point and is in fact saltwater. If they treat this as just a clean up, the management will be sorely disappointed. The raising of the building will not be done and as a result, this will be only a temporary measure. If people have gone over the causeway from Cayo Coco as well as the causeway from Cayo Santa Maria one notices the differences. The Cayo Santa Maria causeway has bridges raised so that the water runs freely and the damage to the mangroves is minimal in comparison to the causeway from Cayo Coco to the mainland that had dirt brought to fill in for the bridges. The mangrove damage there is extensive. The same situation is at the hotel where the building structure is at fault. A clean up may improve temporarily some problems but unless something major is done and requiring a great deal of money, this will be temporary.
