This is going to sound odd, but do the Cuban women make pickles?

1. Re: pickles

That is something I have never noticed. Interesting question.

They certainly have enough cucumbers...

Best I can come up with is an article pointing out that Sandals varadero had them 7 years ago, I don't remember seeing them while I've been there.

And who knows, those "Cuban" pickles at the resort might have been imported from the US...

This is a fascinating question!

I've never seen them. A Cuban Sandwich does have pickles, although that doesn't really help much since I've never seen one of them in Cuba either. Hmmm......

No.

No dill.

No small cucumbers of the pickling variety (only the big fat ones)

No jars, lids, sealers, canning equipment like the big pot to sterilize the jars in.

Heads of garlic are the size of your thumbnail and take forever to clean.

And who the heck would want to slave over a hot pot of boiling water when it's 34 degrees?

That being said, my Cuban family goes crazy for pickles, pickled pearl onions and olives that can sometimes be purchased in the store., Goes great in a cold pasta salad.

Gengen,

Canadian women/men do make pickles. I made pickled beats and cucumber relish and standing over the stove doesn't take that long, I even went outside for a minute. The reason I was asking was, I was wondering if it was hard to get the spices like celery seed, mustard seed and turmeric.

10. Re: pickles

Cubans must have made them before the revolution because a real Cuban sandwich has pickles on it.

I know that real Cuban sandwiches no longer exist in Cuba but you can still get them in South Florida.
