Best Crush Parties/Events

Planning a trip for next fall's crush. We have been in the area or at a winery when harvest/crush was going on by pure chance, now we are trying to time the trip to coincide with our favorite vineyard's crush. Obviously, there is some give and take because of the weather and when a particular area might begin all the activity. That aside, what we are hoping for help with is if anyone out there has a particular favorite crush "activity" or knows who really throws a good party. We are members of several wine clubs in both Napa and Sonoma so we get those invites but we are looking to branch out so to speak....

Bear in mind "crush" is a time of intense activity-- it's fun to watch, but crazy stressful for the winemakers and their crews.

It's not uncommon to work around the clock-- harvesting the grapes at night (if sugar levels happen to be best), then destemming, crushing, and working on the process of fermentation (punch downs, pump-overs, lots of really cool stuff to see, if you can get in).

If you work at a winery, sleep (not parties) are the thing you look forward to most during this time of year.

Once the grapes are all in, and everyone heaves a collective sigh of relief, THAT is when a lot of the "harvest parties" happen-- but it's a small, intimate thing for a lot of wineries-- more a private celebration of gratitude for making it through another year, and surviving/thriving.

So if you want to enjoy crush, go for it!!! Late September to Mid-October is the best time, depending on which wines you like. Sparkling Wines start harvest sooner, big cabs begin harvest later. If you're lucky, you may get to see part of the crush.

But they won't be partying at the same time.

So if you love-love-love a particular winery, just call and ask them when (and what) their big events are for their loyal tasting club members (we're assuming you're members of their tasting clubs, as many of the ultra-special events are only for tasting club members).

Also, if cost is no concern, the annual wine auction (in June) is pretty spectacular. Check it out at: http://www.napavintners.com/anv/ But getting in can be pricey.

Does that help?
