Best B&B in Napa Valley area?

My boyfriend and I are planning a trip to Napa Valley/Sonoma this October. For past trips, we have stayed at hotels like Carneros Inn, Harvest Inn, Renaissance Sonoma. This trip, he has suggested that I find a great romantic B&B. Suggestions would be welcome. Thank you!

Check out Honor Mansion in Healdsburg or Mc Arthur Place in Sonoma. :)

There are more than 100 B&Bs/small Inns in the Napa Valley-- a fantastic selection.

Each has its own particular charm and style-- you can often see this visiting their websites.

Some folks look at the TripAdvisor reviews, and pick the #1 or #2 rated property. This is an OK approach-- but a few things should be mentioned:

-The top 20 B&Bs/small Inns in the Napa Valley are ALL rated higher than the #2 hotel in Napa. But since the B&Bs are in a separate category, most folks don't see this.

-B&Bs are ranked (ie, #1, #2, #3) not just by glowing reviews-- they are also sorted, in part, by NUMBER OF ROOMS. This means a 5 room B&B can (and will) be ranked higher than a 10 or 15 room B&B. And it means a 33 room B&B will be near the bottom, even if it has great reviews.

Our advice to friends:

-Figure out the dates you're going to visit (hint: midweek Mon-Wed is often easier-- and cheaper, and Thu/Fri/Sat/Sun in San Fran can also be easier/cheaper). So if you're visiting both SF and Napa, being able to come midweek to Napa will give you more choices-- and better prices.

-Read the TA reviews (and Yelp, and others, like bedandbreakfast.com), and don't just look for raves-- look for things that appeal to YOU, as a person. Each B&B/Inn has its own personality-- finding one that fits who you are/what you like.

-Check out the websites, and see what your top 5-10 choices have during the dates you'll be here. Write down the prices so you can compare.

-Most important step: One you've narrowed it down to your top 3 or 4, CALL THEM-- each one of them. How you're treated on the phone is often a good indicator of how you'll be treated in person.

B&Bs are small operations, and the innkeepers can get really busy at times (making breakfast, helping guests w/winery tours, etc) that if you get their answering machine/voicemail, OR, if you get a reservation service, ask for a call back.

Talking to the innkeeper can really give you a great "feel" for what staying there is like.

Chances are, of the 3-5 places you call, one will just "fit"-- you'll feel a sense of rapport w/the innkeepers. Choosing a place like that can make a difference-- between a fun trip, or one that is so memorable you'll be talking about it for the rest of your life.

We hope you have a great visit to the Napa Valley. It's a very special place. :)
