Anywhere to see giant redwoods/sequoias near Napa Valley?

We'll be in St. Helena for five days in May and were hoping to see the giant redwoods or sequoias during our visit. However, if I have to choose between wine and trees, I'll pick the wine every time, so we won't want to drive more than an hour or two to see the trees. :) Any suggestions?

There are two types of big trees in California: coast redwoods (tall/thin) and giant sequoias (big/fat). The California Coast Redwoods are the tallest trees in the world and are only found near the coat. Sequoias grow only at altitude so they're not on offer within 2 hours of Napa.

There is a redwood grove -- Armstrong Woods State Park -- in Sonoma County not far from Healdsburg. http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=450

There are a few wineries right here in the valley with sequoia groves. Look at Reverie on Diamond Mountain, with a unique 'faerie ring', and Sequoia Grove Winery, right in the heart of the valley on Hwy 29 in Oakville.

If you want to see the ancient redwoods you will want to go to Armstrong Grove State Nature Reserve in Guerneville. You would go north on Hwy 29 to Calistoga, 8 miles, then take 128 to Geyserville, 28 miles. Turn south for 8 miles on Hwy 101 to Headsburg. Then take Westside Road about 17 miles to Guerneville.

It is a pretty drive and IMO worth it to see an entire grove. These are coast redwoods, very tall and wide, but not as wide as the Sequoias, which do not grow in groves on the coast, but inland, as in Sequoia and Kings Canyon parks south of Yellowstone Park. (The Sequoias are not as tall as the redwoods.)

I just noticed that Nancy directed you to the Sequoia Grove Winery a grove of Sequoias. Looks like a great winery, so if you are really pressed for time try it. I have never seen them there, in fact did not know they existed, As White Dahlia said, they usually grow at higher altitudes. It would be a different experience from Armstrong but at least you will see a few big trees. Your decision. Have a good trip.

If you do go to Armstrong, there are some excellent wineries to go to all along the way....

and many with excellent views of the redwoods from their tasting rooms......

Gary Farrell has an amazing tasting room with good views of the redwoods

garyfarrellwinery.com/visit/tour-and-tasting

and there is a nice place for a deli type lunch at Korbels - outside deck overlooking trees as well.

garyfarrellwinery.com/visit/tour-and-tasting

and then just a short drive from there to Armstrong - its well worth seeing.

Although there are redwoods in other areas.....since you have 5 days I would definitely incorporate Armstrong Redwoods.

For more wineries along Westside Road on your drive there see

russianrivertravel.com/wineries/westsideroad…

In short wine and trees - most definitely....

If you are going to be coming from or returning to San Francisco, then it's really easy to plan a stop on the way at Muir Woods. Stunningly beautiful and memorable, at least to this east coaster!!
