Paihia to Auckland airport car rental drop off

We will be leaving Paihia and need to drop off hire car at Auckland airport in time to check in around midday. It will be a Sunday morning.

Please can someone advise if that is reasonable - presumably with an early start from Paihia! Are there any particular car hire drop off points easier than others as time will be critical. We had been thinking of using Apex.

Thanks for any tips.

You would need to leave Paihia by 8 to be fairly sure of arriving at Auckland Airport comfortably by 12, but it is fairly reasonable to do this.

Allowing 4 hours should be comfortable for that journey.

If you use Apex you have to drop off at their depot which is slightly off the airport and then get their shuttle to the airport, which is all fine but will mean you need to allow an extra 20 minutes or so.

If you use Avis or Hertz, then the drop off is at the terminal so will save you a bit of time.

Thank you so much - that has put my mind at ease that it will be achievable.

Useful tip on the Car Hire depot - will bear that in mind for when we book.

Be on the road by 7:30am at least. Along Northland main roads, there are continuous road-works. Having an extra half-hour up your sleeve to deliver vehicle and take your transfer (if need be) is a good insurance policy.

I would second leaving at the earlier time suggested by Frangipani. The road from the BOI is notorious for accidents, road works, slips and such like that one needs to allow for all eventualities. IF you take out full CDW cover and don't require a full inspection of the vehicle on return to the depot it will also ease the pressure.

From a personal perspective I would adopt belt and braces and leave no later than 7.00 am. It is better to arrive at the airport early rather than late or warm the bell.

The earlier the better, then when you get closer to Auckland you can relax with a coffe at Orewa or some similar place. It is a long drive if you don't know the road and conditions.

(I remember the bad old days when it was a five or six hour drive from Whangarei to Auckland, unsealed roads etc.)

Just my two pennys-worth.

Hi, we've just driven Paihia to Auckland and the airport should be an easy 3.5 hours on a Sunday morning. The roads have been significantly upgraded and once you hit Whangarei the run through to Auckland is an easy one with many passing lanes. There are many more passing lanes on the run to BOI from Auckland than from Auckland to Coromandel. BTW the bypass means you actually don't go through Orewa now, the road bypasses it. Also don't forget to pay the toll!
