carmel to Half Moon Bay

Hi - spending a few days in Carmel/Monterey and then heading to Half Moon Bay. Anyone know of a place with a view to stop and have some lunch on the way? Either in Santa Cruz or off the beaten path on the way? Thanks in advance

There are a lot of choices. Any preferences for budget, type of food, ambiance?

Hi November Moon - no preference other than casual, maybe outside sitting, and a nice view of the ocean. (Adult beverages don't hurt either) Ok, four preferences for lunch....

Well, there is Santa Cruz and then there is the Davenport Roadhouse and then Duarte's (Doo-Arts) in Pescadero.

While the Davenport Roadhouse is just across the road from the bluffs on the ocean, there isn't really an ocean view from inside, and Pescadero is off Hwy 1 a mile or two, but it fits your "off the beaten path" description. They are famous for artichoke soup and ollallieberry pie. But by the time you get to Pescadero you are only about 10 miles from Half Moon Bay.

Anyway, have a look.

I am going to suggest a rather new place in Santa Cruz which is casual and you can sit outside and it's right down by the Municipal Wharf. It is called the Picnic Basket and is owned by a young couple who also own the Penny Ice Creamery in town. (wonderful ice cream). Here is a yelp review.

I'd suggest Duarte's for their Olallieberry Pie and ice cream (get one slice and share). And it's a fun "off the beaten path" spot. But pass on the artichoke soup .. it might make a good wallpaper paste but it has no flavor of artichokes at all.

Thanks for suggestions and pronunciations – I would have called it “dor taes” . Looks like the perfect stop before HMB…..

If you can wait till you get to Half Moon Bay, Sam's Chowder House has everything you're looking for! :)

Sam's is great - was there in Sept. Was looking for something new but it's hard to beat an old favorite and Sam's just might be calling our names :-)

The Crow's Nest in Santa Cruz also has everything you're looking for but the food quality is much better at Sam's. :).
