Highway help needed!

We are staying in Williamsburg Mar. 15 - 22. When we leave on the 22nd we want to make our way over to

I-79- avoiding Washington to go to Morganstown. I see that there is a highway 250 cutting across to

I-79. What is this hwy like? Is it ..4 lane? 2 lane? Is it ok to use at this time of year? Is it well travelled? Thanks for any help!!

look at the recent post in this forum titled Scaredy Cat!!-that traveler was interested in driving the reverse-Pittsburgh to VA Beach. There are several replies re. good routes.

Thanks jwhiteree that was really helpful and the last post in particular looks promising. Hubby is still asking what HWY 250 is like as it seems to go directly across to I-79.

Silly question but is this driving through big mountains on all these routes?

We've never been to this part of the country before...oh we've flown over it and had a good look, but we've never diven it.

?

Are you talking about 250 that comes from the Wheeling WV area?

I have never been in that part of WV, but looking at one of my favorite "Internet toys", Google Maps on "terrain mode", it looks like that road is a windy, ridge-top, full of switchbacks, mountain road, especially around areas like Bellton.

I bet it is a gorgeous drive, but arduous.

It is the same hwy but much further south than Wheeling as we would start it at Stauton and then go north west over to Morgantown. What is that google site?? sounds interesting. Hey we've got almost the same # of posts..but you SURE have me beat as to the number of places you've been!!

Ah, okay, I think I have my bearings now and see where you are heading.

If you are trying to get from 79 in West Virginia over to 64, I don't know much about 250, but 33 is a fairly decent, and well-traveled road. Parts of it have been enhanced to a 4-lane divided highway from 79 to Elkins. 250 follows this same path for a while. Between Elkins and Harman, and then down to Seneca Rocks area I think the road is still 2-lane. I know for a fact that it is this way south from Seneca Rocks as I was in that area in the fall. I wouldn't let this concern you though, as this area of West Virginia is very beautiful and highly-visited so the roads are well maintained.

You can follow 33 south out of Seneca Rocks to Riverton/Judy Gap and then over the mountains and eventually end up in Harrisonburg VA. From there I-81 will take you into Staunton where you can pick up 64 to Richmond/Williamsburg.

If you do a search for Google Maps, you will find the U.S. and the ability to zoom in on areas with map, satellite and terrain views. Some satellite views are better than others depending on the resolution and the availability of recent aerial pictures. Terrain will give you an idea how mountainous the area is. I just find it fun!

Hope all this helps!

Ok, I'm looking at my map and 33 is out of Harrisonburg and 250 out of Staunton. All I can say about 250 is it's the same color and size of 33, meaning it's the same type road. They run sort of parallel about 20+ miles apart. Within that area of the National Forest, though, I've only been as far north as Warm Springs and then as far south as Rt. 68 and not in between 219 and 81 right in there.

That Google map with the terrain showing is simply amazing!! We would be travelling through mountain after mountain! I would simply love to do that 250 hwy but on seeing the terrain it would take us so much longer to get back. My husband has looked at each and every suggested route and he has us now doing the zig zag (thanks to all posts)and now getting us up to Grove City PA. It will be Easter weekend so we will just grin and bear the traffic as we want to get home for family Easter as well. Thanks for the help!!!
