First Time in VB

Never been before. We usually go to the OBX but I'm looking for a shorter drive as we are coming from CT. Can you tell me anything about the area? I am looking into getting a vacation home w/private pool. What area should I be looking to rent in- I have 2 teenager sthat like to bike to shops, icecream, etc....

Thanks in advance for your help!!

Spend the extra time and go to OBX, unless you are looking for a more exciting nightlife. Va Beach is very commercial, and has a lot more "going on" in a much smaller area, but this is personal preference. It is not that much longer of a drive to OBX. Was there more specific type of information you looking for?

For a private home with a pool you'd look in Virginia's outer banks which is Sandbridge in VB, the area south of the three mile boardwalk area. The southern end of Va's outer banks boarders the northern end of NC's outer banks but you cannot cross over. Also look into the North End. north of the boardwalk. The boardwalk area has mostly hotels...rooms, 1-2-3 bedrooms suites.

In Sandbridge look up Sandbridge realty and Siebert Realty.

For the north end look up Atkinson realty and Pyle Realty.

Let us know what other questions we can answer.

We went to the OBX for years, but once our kids got to be teenagers, they revolted, claiming "there's nothing to do there but watch the grass grow." So, we made the switch to VB, and are so glad.

If you stay in the resort area, you won't need to get into your car the whole time you are there. Is a great trolley (The Wave) which goes to all the restaurants, hotels and attractions - and even to the local mall. The boardwalk is spectacular in that it runs the length of the tourist area, and has a parallel bike path (you also can rollerblade on it). There are bands playing along the boardwalk every evening, and free weekend concerts at two beachside parks with stages.

check out "vbfun.com" for schedule of festivals/events.

Are blocks and blocks of touristy shops, a small amusement park, the usual putt-putt, parasailing, "fun houses", water park and go-karts (south of the tourist area), and surfing at 5th street with lessons available from all the surf shops.

The beach is really, really wide and they keep it clean. There are lifeguards at intervals along the length of the beach.

Should you tire of the sand, Colonial Williamsburg is only one hour away, or you can go to Norfolk and take a tour of the Norfolk Naval Station.

Where the OBX is a quiet, sleepy vacation spot, VB has action and all the fun you want. I am sure you would have a great time.

The only caveat is if you rent a house at Sandbridge, you would have to drive abou 20 minutes or so to get to the tourist area. But, at the OBX, you have to drive everywhere.

Please write back if you have any other questions! Have a great vacation.

If you aren't interested in the resort area, then I also highly suggest Sandbridge. It's a lot like OBX, but you do always have the opportunity to explore the rest of VB while you are there if you want.

I've been to both OBX and Virginia Beach, and I think they are different experiences--not sure I would say one is "better" than another. I have gotten a little tired of the length of the drive to the OBX, as it gets longer every year. The distance hasn't changed, it is just more popular, and has no new infrastructure to support all the new homes being built up north.

OBX is a great experience if you want a quietish beach where you can walk home for lunch and cook your own meals. I don't think you have to "drive everywhere"--once you get there, and buy food, you just walk to the beach, which is only accessible to you and the others who rent on that street.

Virginia Beach is a line of hotels with fine sandy beaches. The water is always quite a bit warmer than OBX for some reason. The beaches and water are also much more crowded. I had difficulty bogey boarding one day because of the number of people in the water, most of them standing in the surf throwing a ball.

I had good experiences in both places, but all things being equal, and if the drive weren't so long, I prefer the OBX experience.

Our three kids(12,10, &7) have been to both and prefer VB, for a few reasons. 1)Close proximity to Busch Gardens to get their rollercoaster ya-ya's out.(day trip) 2)Motorworld-go carts- 3)Skinny Dip and 4)Jewish Mother for breakfast. We, as parents like it because there is alot to do with in walking distance, so we can imbibe and not drive.

Yes, at peak season everyone wants to be near the water. But the sand is very very wide, many places 300' (football field) from boardwalk to ocean so I've never seen it totally packed except like July 4 when more and more people arrived throughout the day and remained for concerts and fireworks.

And, again, not so all hotels....that's in the resort area. A lot of people like the closer but still outer banks of Va, the Sandbridge section of VB. Homes, a few condos, how much commercialism? 1/2%:) Very peaceful, yes, the usual single road.

VB's outer banks touch NC's OBX but one cannot cross the border there from one to the other.
