Where to stay in Virginia Beach

Does anybody have an opinion on whether it's better to stay in the Resort Area or Chesapeak Bay? We have a 5 year old and would love a place with a pool near the beach.... but also walking distance to shops, etc. Our first time there......

Then you need to stay in the resort area. The Bay is more residential. There are a few restaurants and convenience stores, but it doesn't meet your requirements, in my opinion.

Any opinion on good places to stay in the resort area? Seems like there are a ton of them. The simpler, the better for us... Not a huge hotel with many floors (might take 20 minutes to leave the place)... But also quality.

You could do worse than the Residence Inn in Virginia Beach. I can also recommend (highly) Pi-zzeria which is almost directly in back of it.

The Marriott up the Street has an outdoor pool, and shows movies at night.

What do you mean by quality? How about the smaller, privately own Capes? It reminds us of an inn. It is oceanfront. It does have an indoor pool which is smallish but handy on a rainy day. There's a little cafe behind the hotel so you can eat looking out on the boardwalk and ocean. And you're in the midst of activities and walk to restaurants. There's also a surry/bicycle rental right beside it.

Or maybe a floor in one of the Cutty Sark cottages.

You will enjoy the boardwalk in the summer. There is a small retro amusement park that moves to the boardwalk in the summer. And lots of mini golf, scultures the kids like to climb on, a couple of small playground arrangements on the beach

There's a fun tram tour through Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge:
