A few helpful ideas. Let us know what else you'd like to know about as you fine tune.

For parking and restrooms, go here and click at "parking" and "restrooms":

visitvirginiabeach.com/visitors/…

Restrooms don't allow changing but it can usually be managed with towels around little ones and the bigger ones figure it out.

There are shower height rinse offs at most, if not all, the public accesses. They are meant for rinse offs before getting in the car, on the bus, whatever. But I have seen long lines waiting patiently as people rinse out their pails and shovels and chairs and babies and wash a few heads of hair.

There are many foot rinse offs. They seem to be at every place there are steps down to the sand.

Both rinse offs are usually on the hotel side of the boardwalk rather than the sand side.

You should also check the following list for events and festivals on the date of your visit. You might, for example, want to aim for the 20th St. public access to be near the 20th St. barge and its fireworks on fireworks night. There are several stages just beside the boardwalk where people can stand around and listen to the music. There are lots of beachy sculptures for kids to climb on...the make great photos for memory books and holiday cards, like the giant colorful beachballs or turtles. These are just off the boardwalk, as are museums in little historic cottages and open air memorials. There's the pier, too, and the amusement park who's retro rides move to just beside the boardwalk for the summer. There's more rides and mini golf nearby. There are also great playgrounds and benches for resting.

And here is the stuff you'll see as you walk the boardwalk, contributions made by Wendy and me and others:

Stages, small and medium with entertainment:

You can also start clipping coupons here (make sure the exp. date is current):

sunnydayguide.com/virginia_beach/vb_coupons.…

You'll see lots of bicycles and surries with the striped covers on top as you explore the boardwalk. Cheries Bicycles and Blades rents them at numerous locations right beside the boardwalk. They have regular old school bicycles, romantic tandems, and surries for two or more. You'll find their ad with their locations in the Sunny Day Guide linked above.

The Wave bus that runs the main drag, Atlantic Ave., is inexpensive. The map will show you the route (click on it to enlarge it) along the main drag, to the Aquarium and to some shops:

VB has a curfew. 18 and under can't be in public places between 11pm and 5 am. unless with a parent or guardian.

If your family is not familiar, be aware of ocean water, currents, etc. We have taken relatives who thought they'd sit on the beach while the kids romped, thinking more "brook" or "stream" than "ocean". So keep your eye on them. And put on that sun lotion. All the light reflected off ocean, sand and boardwalk can be strong. And do be aware of hot very very hot the sand can be on bare feet. Enclosed sneakers of some kind are good.

wow! Thanks for all the info and links, that will be very helpful. I will start to f/u. My neice is considering going into DC to see the Aquarium. We were not aware Va Beach had an Aquarium. How do the two Aquariums compare??

The national one is not worth a separate trip just for that unless they've done something recently. If you've heard great things about the National Aquarium it's the one in Baltimore you want. They joined forces as the National Aquarium. While DC's is a nice break and walk around (they have a 45 minutes self guided tour), the one in Baltimore offers more and takes longer. Consequently, the one in Baltimore is more than 3 times the admission cost of the one in DC.

The Virignia Aquarium and Marine Science Center has 800,000 gallons of aquatic life, an aviary, nature trail. They have an Imax Theater...enormous screen...I think 8 stories by 6 stories. There are Marsh and Bay and Ocean activities and a Creek Cruise. There are prices separated out so you don't have to pay for what you don't want. Or you can just take a pontoon creek cruise for about $7 each.

Check it out here and see if you can tailor it to what you're interested in:
