Williamsburg in the snow? Does CW close down for snow?

We're Californians, here on the East Coast for a brief research trip. A big snow storm is forecast for tomorrow, 3/3 when we planned to come visit CW. We had actually planned to visit Monticello first, but heard back from our B & B that based on the forecast it sounded like they would be closing Monticello!! We are happy to reroute to Williamsburg, but don't want to waste our time if there is a likelihood that everything closes during snowstorms.

What would you recommend for a good place to stay as well as what would you suggest we do on a snowy winter day in Williamsburg? Any recommendations would be appreciated since we need to make our plans quickly. We would also welcome recommendations for activities in this general vicinity that 2 adult history buffs would be able to enjoy in spite of a snow storm.

Thank you ahead of time!!

Here is what happened last time it snowed, and schools and government offices were closed...

"The Wig Shop, Wythe House, Geddy House, Randolph House, Courthouse and Capitol at Colonial Williamsburg are closed. All other sites and trade shops are open. Carriage rides will not be offered. Shields Tavern is open for lunch and the 5 p.m. dinner seating. Tarpley’s, Greenhow and Craft House Stores will open by 11 a.m. The Colonial Williamsburg Lodge and restaurant are open, as are the Visitor Center, Visitor Center Café and Revolutions. The museums are open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the Museum Café is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m."

That was on January 28, 2014. Weather predictions are just that--predictions. What until the white stuff is on the ground.

Criminy, I hate to equivocate, but it depends on how hard the storm hits. I just called the CW ticket office and they don't *anticipate* closing but if travel conditions grow treacherous, they will shut down, so cross your fingers. An announcement will be made on its website colonialwilliamsburg.com.

The Virginia Department of Transportation offers traffic and road conditions at 511virginia.org. You can also call 511 for info.

The local Visitor Centers should be staffed (subject to the severity of the weather):

Williamsburg Hotel/Motel Assoc: 757-220-3330 800-446-9244

Colonial Williamsburg: 1-800-447-8679

Newport News Visitor Center: 757-886-7777 1-888-493-7386

Local websites with cancellation information include:

Dailypress.com

WAVY.com

WVEC.com

WTKR.com

Should it end up being a Winter Wonderland, Duke of Gloucester Street in the Colonial area is a beautiful place to walk if you're staying nearby. A few blocks over, the College of William & Mary is also a lovely historic stroll.

But, my GUESS is that we won't be getting it as badly as will our neighbors to the north. Unbelievable---today's high was 68! But generally, even IF any of the attractions do have to shut down, they should reopen the next day. Just a heads up---it's going to be invigoratingly cold! :-)

CW rarely completely closes; even during a major ice storm back in the late 1990's, some things remained open. The last complete closure that I remember was for a day following Hurricane Isabel, and even then, lodging and food service was open.

As for where to stay, if it's within your budget, stay at the Lodge. You're just a block from the Historic Area, and there is underground parking. The restaurant and lounge at the Lodge are quite good as well. I hope you come and have a very good time.

I am so surprised - just read on CW's facebook page that they will be closing today, and plan to re-open at 11 on Tuesday, Mar. 4.

CW Hotels will remain open to accommodate guests. There's a cozy fire burning at the Williamsburg Lodge right now!
