Waiting in Bellingham

Our ferry from Sitka gets in at 8am. We had planned to catch the 9.32am train to Vancouver but we have been told by Amtrak that our luggage had to be checked in 60 minutes before departure and "no" we could not take our cases into the carriage with us if we did not meet this deadline because the ferry was late. At our age we don't like hassle. So we have decided to buy tickets instead on the 12:40 Greyhound bus. This now gives us the problem of what to do with our 2 small cases while we wait for 4 hours. I notice that the Bellingham station appears to have no toilets nor waiting room. Can anyone suggest what we two seniors can do during this four hour wait? Where are the toilets? Where to store our luggage? Does the ferry port have luggage lockers? I really appreciate the help these forums give as this is our first visit to your country.

Hi Bibi,

Finally got through by phone to the ferry terminal folk and there are some luggage storage lockers in the ferry terminal although the ticket agent described them as small, about three feet by two feet. The ferry terminal is a very nice building with toilets, a couple of shops, a small café, and some seating. The bus/train terminal is only a very short walk down the driveway and across the train tracks.

The main street in front of all the terminals is Harris Avenue; see map: https://www.google.com/maps/search/bellingham+ferry+terminal/@48.7207978,-122.5084847,17z

If you walk to the left up Harris Avenue to the area starting at 9th Street through 13th Street, you will be in Fairhaven (Bellingham's "old town") which is full of shops and cafes--a great place to spend your wait time. Here is a map of that area: http://www.audiomaps.com/fairhaven/. I will warn you that the walk to Fairhaven, although not too long, is up hill going.

If you turn right on Harris Avenue coming out of the ferry terminal, there is a small Marine Park with a few benches where you can sit and enjoy the water view.

Thank you for your brilliantly informative replies and your time phoning the ferry terminal. I have been trying to get information from Amtrak and it is like pulling hen's teeth! They seem only able to answer one question at a time and then not the exact question asked.

Further to your information I had this reply from the ferry terminals manager "Upon your arrival, please check in at the Alaska Ticketing Office and request a locker for your suitcases. They cost $6 US and when you return the locker key to the office, you will receive $5 of that back.

Café and restrooms, etc. will all be open and available at 8am.

Cheers

Bibi
