Point Brown - Ocean Shore

I am thinking of traveling to Ocean Shore. It will be our first time there. I have some questions and hoping for some feedback.

1. What are some activities to do? We do like the outdoors and museums. Must be within driving distance?

2. What's the nearest airport?

3. What are some of the nightlife attractions?

4. What is the weather like in the month of August?

5. How far is Ocean Shore from Seattle? Is it worth driving too? What would be some of the things (attractions) to do there?

Thanks - we look forward to hearing some feedback :-)

Where are you coming from? Do you have more planned than just Ocean Shores? How many days or nights do you have for your trip?

Gray's Harbor Airport?

Have you Googled Ocean Shores? gonorthwest.com/Washington/…Ocean_Shores.htm

Coming from Las Vegas and or San Diego. I am doing my research and planning for next year (Aug 2010). Trying to figure out if 5 days will bee good or is 7 days good enough? I am trying to plan out the itinerary now. :-)

I haven't been to that site. I will check it out - thank you! I saw the Mueseum of the North Beach for things to do.

It may be a group of 4 to 6 women. Numbers can change. Again, just trying to determine if this is a place for us to go? We like shopping (markets, malls, Boutiques, shows, dinner shows, and a little nightlife would be nice. This vacation could end up turning into a "Birthday" vacation. So, with that in mind - want to be sure there were stuff to do. (Be canoeing, rafting, horseback riding, snorkling, hiking, dancing)

Driving up to Seattle I noticed was approximately 3 hours from Ocean Shores. Would you say that it would be worth the drive? Perhaps like an all day visit?

Given your last post and expressed variety of interests, I have no idea why you would choose Ocean Shores. :) Yes, a day trip, perhaps an overnight, but it sounds like you want to settle in one place.

If not, however, aside from Seattle, Victoria, Vancouver and Portland, I really don't know how you'd fit all those needs to an Ocean Shores, a coastal community.

If you wanted great scenery and outdoorsy stuff, I'd say OR coast, such as Cannon Beach or Newport areas, for Oregon.

Victoria, itself, is quite nice and you would have the time for day trips (or overnights) to places on Vancouver Island.

Seattle itself has much to offer for day or more trips.

Perhaps it would help me, at least, to understand the most important focus or needs of your trip. Then a location decision can take that into account.

Here's one, of many, Inside Pages that might give you some ideas of this incredible region.

Voyaging -

:-) I selected Ocean Shores because Point Brown was one of the locations we could stay. Not to mention I was drawn to how the building looks so beautiful and peaceful. Not to mention that some of the pictures that showed the views from the rooms (kitchen, living) appear to be so beautiful.

I can look into other destinations like Newport, OR and Sunriver,OR.

Being from the city (LV) I could use a change in scenery. I figure if I can get a place reserved (Point Brown Ocean Shores or Newport, OR) that would be great.

I know it's a year from now. As for the "activities" I really don't have that special thing we must do or have to do. Just having a variety of options is good. Especially, if traveling with a group of 6 to 8 woman! (If 1 person picks something to do - we end up having plenty of things to do in a period of 5 - 7 days). I thought if I had listed some of our interests - I I thought we could find at least 2-3 things to plan/reserve for our activities to do. Make sense?

When we went to Puerta Vallarta for 7 nights we did:

- Pirate dinner show cruise

- horseback riding

- zip line

- shopping

- hung out at the beach

- night club

- sunset boat ride

I hope this clarifies what I am looking for.

I've written a travel guide to the county (Grays Harbor County) here:

www.northbeachvacation.com/attractions.html

This was centered on Pacific Beach, where I own a house, but it would apply to Ocean Shores too.

Your activities will mostly be natural attractions outdoors.

The best museum would be the Maritime Museum at Westport - a one hour drive - with its two complete whales skeletons and the absolutely beautiful lens from the Destruction Island lighthouse, which they display lighted and in motion. In Westport you also have the state's tallest lighthouse.

You might read online about a foot ferry between Ocean Shores and Westport, but I heard that it went out of business.

You would fly into SeaTac Airport (SEA). A two hour drive from Ocean Shores.

The only nightlife would be the Indian casino at the Quinault Beach Resort. They have a restaurant, sushi bar, live music, and gambling. We have a smoking ban in most of the state, but it doesn't apply to Indian casinos, so you'd have to tolerate the smoke.

The weather right at the coast will be cool even in August: low 60s to mid 70s.

Seattle is too far for a day trip. The two outstanding day trips would be to Lake Quinault and Point Grenville on the Quinault Indian Nation lands. I think you'd also enjoy a stop by Seabrook - a pretty resort town. There isn't much interesting shopping along the coast. You might make a day trip to Olympia for its farmers market, waterfront area, and the state Capitol building. Olympia is about an hour and a half away.

we went to Ocean Shores this year and enjoyed our stay immensely

But MEXICO it is NOT!!

Can't be compared to Puerto Vallata.

We had a timeshare week and used it as a base for five days - one day we went on a road trip and ended up staying at Walker INN Quilcene, (i think??)

It took us 5 hours to get to Ocean Shores from Seattle (with GPS which kept say ing turn right into concrete medium strips)- traffic can be slow depending on the time of day you are travelling-

but we are kiwis and drive on the otherside of the road. Our trip to Portland we followed the coast line past Astoria and the scenery was beautiful.

We did not stay the full week- not because we didn't like the place but because we wanted to meet up with internet friends in Portland- Stayed there last two nights and went to see Spruce Goose etc.

We thought the people in Ocean Shores were lovely and friendly and we parcticularly enjoyed dining at the Chinese restaurant - Lucky Dragon - went about 4-5 times for lunch and dinner- excellent value and tasty food.

also went to Irish pub for clam chowder.

Ocean shores is not so much an activity pLace (commercialised it is not) but a restful haven set amongst natural surroundings.

I have fond memories.

It looks like you've been getting lots of advice. There are several things that haven't been mentioned. You may rent an electric boat and tour the canals. Kite flying is really popular. Are you planning on August next year? August this year includes a Body and Sould Festival and Gospel MusicFest. The Interpretive Center is volunteer run and has lots to share on the area, including remnants of the Catala. It's hard to beach some of the scenery. You can drive and horseback ride on the beach.
