Motel in mountains near city...help please.

I'm driving from Charlotte to Detroit over Easter Weekend. I want to stay somewhere near Charleston on the Saturday night going into Easter Sunday morning. I would like to make the most of this night by being in the mountains for the evening. What is a good place to narrow my search. It can be big city or tiny town. I just want that mountain feel. Somewhere I can take a walk and look out. I'm willing to drive a bit off the freeway to find this. I have only driven through the area on my multiple trips from MI to NC. So I have no idea of the area other than the freeway I-77. Just wanna see a bit more of the area. I don't need to focus on the city of Charleston but that is an option too. Figured people on here would know where to go.

Check out Hawks Nest State Park. The road to get there (US Rt 60) is the old "Midland Trail," which is pretty historic: http://www.midlandtrail.com/

The drive up the mountain to Hawks Nest is beautiful, and the lodge there is very nice. They also rent cabins, if you'd rather do that: http://www.hawksnestsp.com/

The view is magnificent. And their restaurant gets good reviews. There is an aerial tramway to take you to the bottom of the gorge where you can rent a boat or go hiking. The resort also has a golf course. It's only about 45 miles from Charleston, and well worth the drive.

On the way from Charleston, you'll pass the Kanawha Falls and the town of Glen Ferris. Stop at the historic Glen Ferris Inn for lunch, overlooking the waterfalls: http://www.glenferrisinn.com/

Upon leaving Hawks Nest State Park, continue east on Rt 60 for about 7 miles to end up on Rt 19 (4-lane interstate) that crosses the famous New River Gorge Bridge: officialbridgeday.com/new-river-gorge-bridge What a view!

Be sure to check out the location on Google Maps, because after visiting the bridge, you can travel north on Rt 19 to Interstate 79 north. Before you get to Pittsburgh, you will turn West on Interstate 70. This isn't really too far out of the way from taking Interstate 77, and will give you a much different view of our state.

Enjoy your trip!

Another option, is to go on Rt. 19 (off of I-77) and head to Fayetteville. Its about 30 minutes away. Not quite as far as Hawks Nest. Plenty of motels, B&B's and cabins in the woods. Plus you can see the New River Gorge Bridge (go to the tourist center there). Lots of nice resturants in Fayetteville too. You could go on to Hawks Nest St. Park from there too if you wanted to. (stay on Rt. 19 to Ansted exit) Might be a little quicker than Rt. 60. As far as someplace closer to Charleston, I really can't think of anything "in the mountains". there.

How many days are you putting into your drive to Detroit? Something to consider if a two day trip. Most any place in WV would put you at less than halfway leaving a longer drive on second day. Add to that most places fitting your criteria will be another hour or more out of route.

The other suggestions are good. I'll throw out another one. I'm figuring your route is up 77 to Charleston and then RT 35 to Columbus.

Like the other suggestions my idea would throw a curve into your route. Stay on I 77 to Parkersburg. Short hop out RT 50 to North Bebd State Park. They have the outdoor setting you're looking for with a lodge and cabins.

Next morning back out to I 77. North to I 70 and across to Columbus.
