Hotel in Wheeling on River

Going to Wheeling this weekend (8/28/10) to visit the LST naval ship. Taking 83-yr old mother; she wants to stay at a hotel on the river. Anyone know a good place that would be convenient and reasonably priced?

The only hotel I know on the river is the old Best Western, which is now called the Wheeling Inn. I stayed there once, and can tell you personally that I would never step foot in that place again. It's a horrible dump.

There are nicer hotels in Wheeling (McClure House downtown, the hotel at Wheeling Island Casino, and Oglebay Resort). But none of those are on the river.

I don't think you'll find anything overlooking the river other than the Wheeling Inn, and I wouldn't recommend staying there. Sorry.

There is a newer Springhill Suites on National Road that is convenient and has a view from the hill, just not of the river! The Heritage Port is nice to enjoy the river, and the Wine and Jazz Festival will also be there for part of the weekend.

There is an article and a picture on the front of the Wheeling paper today about the ship. The paper's website is news-register.net. Also there will be a B17 Bomber at the airport there this weekend that you can tour or take a ride on!

Thanks for the link; nice article. We decided to stay at the SpringHill Suites. A very nice person named Sheila helped me on the phone with reservations. It sounds like Wheeling is in for some beautiful weather this weekend to accompany the ship's visit and jazz/wine festival! We may try to see the bomber plane as well; depending on time constraints. Thanks to both of you for your input!!

Also - article in today's Wheeling paper about the Bomber. You may see it in flight! Not sure what your food plans are, but Uncle Pete's has a covered deck with a view of the river a few blocks up from the port, and you'll probably see River City downtown (there is an artisan center there too). The Alpha is another local favorite not far from the hotel. Have fun!

We had a change of plans; stayed at the McLure House downtown, and we were very pleased! With a discount coupon we picked up at the Convention & Visitors Bureau, the room was $72. The place IS old, but it also had a lot of charm. Our room was clean and quiet. Did not partake of the continental bkfst, but two in our party did and said it was satisfactory. The visit to the LST ship was worth the trip; very impressive. We ate at Coleman's for lunch and had DiCarlo's pizza for dinner. (Loved Colemans and the shops around the City Centre; DiCarlo's was so-so.) Enjoyed the jazz music at the riverfront Saturday, and that night there was a street party just outside DiCarlo's, and there was a good rock band there. Had a good time on my first trip to Wheeling..... everyone was very friendly.

Thanks for the update, and glad you enjoyed Wheeling. It's a great town. Glad to see that you got some of the local flavor at Colemans and DiCarlos.
