Family Vacation Thurs Aug 30-Sun. Sept. 1

We are a family of 4 - 2 adults and 2 boys ages 8 and 9. Visiting Milwaukee for our first time. We are staying near the airport and will have a car. Interested in local events, sports and even driving a day trip to a suburb. Do appreciate your replies!

Check www.onmilwaukee.com for events that might interest you. Just a few that I saw are the Bristol Renaissance Fair (Kenosha, just north of the Illinois border), the Milwaukee Rally at local Harley Davidson dealers (I can't imagine 8 and 9 year old boys who would not love to see and hear hundreds of Harleys on display). You can also tour the Harley Davidson factory.

The Wisconsin Highland games are going on in Waukesha, about 20 miles west of Milwaukee.

Milwaukee also has a great zoo. You can spend some quality time in the parks on Lake Michigan too.

As far as Touring Harley Davidson. Children under 12 are welcome in the tour center but are NOT allowed on the factory tour.

They do not do tours on weekends or major holidays. For up to date information copy and paste:

Welcome!

Here are a few other suggestions:

Check out Miller Park. Not sure if Brewers are here during that weekend.

Museums: Visit the Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee Public Museum, (which has the IMAX Theatre and a great butterfly exhibit, Villa Terrace Museum, check around the grounds of the Discovery World. Next to the Discovery World is a new urban state park. Betty Brinn Children's Museum. Eisner Advertising Museum.

Visit the Milwaukee County Zoo and Pabst Mansion. Always beautiful to stroll the grounds of Marquette University. In the middle of the Museum is the St. Joan of Arc Cathedral. It is truly beautiful.

Take a tour of the Third Ward. Plenty of unique shops/botiques and restaurants. You can also visit the Milwaukee Public Market. You could also take a Segway tour which would be fun.

Stroll down Brady St. or Old World Third St. Brady Street has plenty of restaurants, stores, etc.

Rent a paddle boat, fly a kite or have a picnic on the Milwaukee lakefront. We truly have one of the best unspoiled lakefronts in the country!

Make sure to take an evening drive down Lake Drive. It goes through stunning homes and parks in Shorewood and Whitefish Bay.

Tour the Sprecher or LakeFront Brewery. Can get great beer and root beer afterwards.

For suburbs, I would suggest either Wauwatosa, Brookfield, Greendale or Shorewood area.

Greendale has a very unique downtowwn setting which would be close to the airport.

Malls: Visit Mayfair Mall in Wauwatosa, Brookfield Square Mall in Brookfield or Bayshore Center in Glendale. You will find plenty of typical chain resturants and stores.

Grocery Stores: Trader Joe's in Bayshore Mall, Fresh Market in parking lot of Brookfield Square Mall, Whole Foods on North Avenue. A great local store is Sendiks and Gloriosos.

Restaurants for Families:

Italian/Pizza: Oakland Trattoria on Oakland Avenue near UW- Milwaukee, Palermo Villa off of North Avenue, Louise's near Cathedral Park. You may also want to try Edwardo's Pizza.

Fancy: Osteria Del Mondo, Lake Park Bistro, Bacchus

Chains: PF Chang's, Magginos and Chessecake Factory at Mayfair. Bravo Cucina or California Pizza Kitchen at Bayshore. Bucca Di Beppo downtown.

Brew Pubs: Milwaukee Ale House in Third Ward, Rock Bottom Brewery, Turners Hall, Buck Bradleys, or John Hawk's Public.

Irish: County Claire, Mo's Irish Pub, Buckner's.

Mexican/Cuban: La Perla on S. 5th, mexican place across from Miwlaukee County Research Park in Wauwatosa, which is great, sorry forgot name, Cubanitas on Milwaukee St., Hemmenways on S. 5th St.

Steak: Mr. B's in Brookfield, Capital Grille on Wisconsin Ave., Flemings in Brookfield.

Seafood: Mitchell's at Brookfield Square, Bonefish Grill on Bluemond, Devon Seafood Grille at Bayshore, Coast on Wisconsin Avenue, across from Art Museum.

Breakfast: Orginal Pancake House on Downer, Trocadero near Brewer's Hill, George Webbs for cheap eats.

Dessert: Kopp's Custard in Greenfield, Glendale or Brookfield or Gille's in Wauwatosa. Chessecake Factory at Mayfair.

The Brewers are in town and play the Pirates and Astros - go online and order your tickets now.

The boys should enjoy the Discovery World Museum immensely, and might also enjoy the Public Museum. Walk them over the bridge to see the Art Museum wings open - but they might be bored with the art inside (don't know what your sons like). Take them on a boat tour of the river and inside the breakwater - either using the Milwaukee Boat Line or Brew City Queen. Take them on the Sprecher or Miller tour. Kids like factory tours, and they will get free sodas (LOTS) at Sprecher, or free root beer at Miller. It's fun to see the inner workings. If they know how to ice skate, it might be worth it to take them into the Pettit Center to skate around their huge track. You could also take them disc golfing at Dretzka park, or golfing in one of our county parks if they golf yet. There is also lawn bowling (bocce) at Lake Park which can be fun. Drive them to a Kopp's frozen custard or Leon's for great custard and burgers.

I believe Comedy Sportz does a family comedy show downtown as well, and they are ALWAYS a good time.

If you hit the lakefront downtown - as someone else mentioned, you can buy or I think even rent kites at Gift of Wings, rent these little pedal cars that the whole family can ride in, or pedal boats.

They also might immensely enjoy the Urban Ecology Center (see their website) or Schlitz Audubon Center if they are outdoorsy types.

Depending on the weather - day trips could indeed include the Renaissance Faire - which is a TON of fun, or possibly up to Kohler Andrae State Park to play on the beach and explore the sand dunes.

Have fun!
