Milwaukee Couples Trip

Hello,

My husband, myself and another couple will be traveling around Lake Michigan for 5 days in August 2010. We will be spending two nights and 1.5 days in Milwaukee. We are between the ages of 28-30, very outgoing. We would like to find a good hotel that is centrally located downtown-clean, not too expensive. Any recommendations? Any recommendations for good food? The girls would like to go shopping while the guys would like to go to the brewery tours.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!

The Miller tour is always fun. Quite a hike to the downtown area. There is a Hyatt and Pfister right downtown. Should be plenty of places to stay.

Also when you are going to the upper penn. Google island casino, nice place to stay and should be cheap with discounts. There is a Jelly Belly factory outside of Kenosha, in pleasant prairie, wisconsin. A nice stop after dealing with Chicago traffic. Green Bay has some nice restaurants and hotels around the stadium if you are interested in seeing Lambau Field. The Prime Quarter is a restaurant where you grill your own steak, kinda a nice social restaurant. I am only about 20 minutes from Grand Have and have been to Milwaukee dozen's of times. Have fun and any questions feel free to let me know.

Check out the aloft Hotel in downtown. It's a new, very cool hotel, close to a lot of great bars and restaurants on Water Street, but not so close to any decent shopping although Bayshore and Mayfair are both great and within a 10 to 15 minute drive. Others have found rates for the aloft as low or lower than $75 per night on Hotwire and Priceline.

The Third Ward, just a little south of DT, is a fun area for shopping--quite a few galleries and boutiques.

What are you looking for re: food--budget and type? Here are some of my favorites: For a fabulous high end meal, I love Sanford's. For Thai, Singha Thai, about 15 minutes from DT. For Indian, Mayura, 5 minutes north of DT. For Mexican, there are lots of neigborhood places near 6th & National, 5 minutes south of DT.

DT, Eagan's is good for fish, Water St Brewery iand Rockbottom are decent for a casual meal, China Gourmet is pretty good, Kiku's for sushi.

Bay Shore Town Center a bit north of downtown, next to I43 is a very nice indoor/outdoor shopping area. If you want more funky, check out the Brady Street area both for shopping in boutiques and food. The brewery tours are very popular, there are quite a few with some of the smaller ones like Sprecher's or Lakefront Brewery.

There have been some recent posts that 3rd Ward and Brady Street shopping were not as much as visitors had expected. There are some unique specialty shops, but if you are looking to power shop you should probably take the 15 minute drive to Bayshore or Mayfair mall.

Lakefront Brewery has a good tour and is walkable from the Aloft hotel. Google it for tour times. Sprecher brewery north of downtown would be another brewery to try besides the Miller brewery.

State fair takes place from Aug. 5th thru the 15th in suburban Milwaukee. If you are here at that time hotels may be less easy to come by. If you are here any weekend there will probably be a festival on the Lakefront.

There are some many restaurants in all cuisines and price ranges, it's really hard to make a recommendation.

You might check www.onmilwaukee.com and www.expressmilwaukee.com for ideas on restaurants and things to do while you are here.

yes please clarify what type of shopping? I would recommend Bay Shore Town Center, Mayfair, or the outlet malls in Kenosha - a 25 minute drive south of Milwaukee.

The Miller Brewery is fun just to see the size of the operation, but the Lakefront Brewery Tour is more fun and done with personality. They show all the basics of their process and take you thru the entire plant and the samples are top notch.

For casual dinning you need to try the burgers @ Kopp's Frozen Custard.

Another local gem to try is Mickey Lu BBQ in Marinette, Wisconsin. You won't be sorry.

Enjoy,

Dennis
