Weekend trip without a car

My husband and I are planning a 4 day trip via train to visit Milwaukee for the first time in April and are looking for some advise on where to stay and what to do? We are in our early 30's. We are hoping not to spend too much money on transportation. We like to walk around to see new things, eat, drink, shop...and are open to any other suggestions! What's the best way to get from the amtrak station to downtown? Best centrally located hotel that's reasonably priced? And what are some of the must do's? Thanks so much!

The Amtrak station or Intermodal station as they call it is located downtown. If you are fit and don't mind walking you can get around downtown Milwaukee without a car. Most of the museums are located downtown.

The Milwaukee County zoo, Miller Brewery and some of the other breweries and the Domes (Horticultural exhibits) are located outside of downtown and would require a bus ride, but we can get you info on bus routes if your trip planning progresses.

You might want to search downtown hotels on hotels.com or some other site to check rates for your planned nights. Any downtown hotel would do. Many people report the A Loft is one of the more budget friendly hotels downtown and it is located near the Water Street nightlife area. A few hotels advertise as downtown when they are really not, so check back before you finalize your booking.

At the top of this page you can click on a link of things to do in Milwaukee. If you browse that list you should find some things of interest.

Closest hotels to Amtrak are Marriott, Residence Inn, Hilton Garden Inn, and Courtyard by Marriott. Must sees depend on your interests, but Art and Public Musuem, Harley-Davidson Musuem, and a brewery stop are probably in order.

Lots of options for brewery tours. If you like the "mass produced" the Miller Coors has a nice free tour, with samples afterward. I really like the Lakefront Brewery, but to get there you'll need to take a taxi from the area you're considering for overnighting. The cost is $7pp but you get plenty of samples and a pint glass to keep.

The Trolley is a great way to get around downtown. Only $1 round trip. Your ticket is good all day so you can get on and off whenever you want all day. They only run Thurs.-Sat.

Unfortunately the Trolley will not be running in April. It usually runs Memorial Day through Labor Day weekends.

You might like to Tour the Pabst Mansion, home of one of the more notable Milwaukee "Beer Barons", easily accessible by bus up Wisconsin Ave.

In nice weather, a walk along the lakeshore.

The Milwaukee Art Museum is something we've also enjoyed, as was a boat tour of the Milwaukee River and inner harbor.

I think you have to like motorcycles to enjoy the Harley Museum, we considered it expensive.

For classic Wisconsin cuisine, try and fit in a fish fry at Turner Hall, or one of the many other fine fish frys.

A final note, if you are on the Hiawatha train, (not the Empire Builder) from the South, there are two Milwaukee train stops. The first is the airport stop. Do not take that stop by accident. You want the Milwaukee Downtown (Intermodal) stop. I'm sure that the conductors can inform you further of this.

Since you will be here before festival season, my suggestions are -

Milwaukee Public Museum (they have a Body Worlds exhibit right now too)

Milller Brewery tour - if weather is nice as you walk outside a lot between buildings.

Lakefront Brewery tour. You could do a fish fry there with polka on Friday nights --advance res for this place. They also have the fish fry on Weds during lent.

Water street for bars (AJ Bombers is fun with good burgers)

Brewers game if they are in town or possibly a Bucks game

Pabst Mansion
