Lake Superior Circle Tour - June 2009

My husband and I are doing a Lake Superior Circle Tour for our 1-year anniversary in June. We are both huge fans of the whitefish boil when we go to Door County and we're wondering if anyone knows of any good regular Whitefish boils up around Lake Superior.

Any other suggestions for B&Bs, awesome camping spots, and must-sees would be most appreciated as well. We're in our late 20s/early 30s so we're pretty energetic and adventurous - we'll be camping some of the time but since it's our first anniversary we also want to stay in a few romantic B&Bs. We're also expecting and I'll be about 20 weeks at that point, so please keep activity suggestions pregnant lady appropriate.

Thanks so much for any suggestions!

You'll see Bayfield on here and that is one of our favorite destinations on the Circle tour route.

Local B&B's I recommend:

http://www.rittenhouseinn.com/ great food here. I have not stayed here but have been here for meals. It's a lovely family owned operation. They also own this place about 1 mile or so from the Rittenhouse:

http://www.rittenhouseinn.com/chateau.htm (this sits atop a hill and the interior is just lovely!

for a non B&B I recommend another family owned place that's nice and quiet with great Lake Superior views and a bike trail to you can access right below (no air here if air conditioning is impt. to you). Of course if you're up for camping this maybe no big deal www.seagullbay.com

good food: www.eggtoss-bayfield.com/flash/index.htm

lots of lovely shopping here if you like that and Newago's Fish Market for great trout spread, etc.

If you take a trip to tour the Apostle Islands you might enjoy this one: http://www.apostleisland.com/cruises.htm

for adventure kayak around the areas sea caves

Madeline Island is a great day trip. Big Bay Town Park is a gorgeous location on the island and you can also camp there, we did. Check check in times, weekends if you travel then the spots fill up fast.

Another spot I enjoy is Duluth to watch the ships come in. For the best location and place to stay I recommend the Comfort Inn and Suites right by the Lift Bridge.

and if you like music and go to Bayfield check out the shows at the Big Top: http://www.bigtop.org/tsr/

shows in June: http://www.bigtop.org/tsr/index.php

local places shuttle in to here including Seagull Bay Motel. We find it just as easy to drive in though and come and go as we please.

We love the north shore of Lake Superior. Take hwy 61 along the lake in Minnesota. We stay north of Grand Marais. The state parks along the lake are beautiful. You drive up 61 and there are like 5 or 6 before you get to Grand Portage. Starting with Gooseberry Falls, then Split Rock, then Tettgouche, then George Manitou, then my favorite, Temperance River state park, then cascade river. Lots of hiking trails and waterfalls. All the rivers run into Lake Superior, Beautiful area. the camping is great in these parks too. We usually stay in a cabin right on lake superior, as we go early in the year, and don' know about the weather. Isle Royale National Park is a great area to Canoe or kayak. When you get to the canadian border there are several inland lakes to paddle around also, very secluded and nice. I will send you a link to a photoshow I just made for someone with some pictures of the shoreline and the hiking trails in the state parks along that road. Minnesota does a great job with the parks too.

I can see what info I have as far as places to stay.

The Grand Portage National monument is really educational and interesting. They dress up everyday and do tours. It is worth going in. I think there are a few pics in the photo show I sent to you PM>

My husband and I just returned from a week at the Apostle Islands. We own a 22ft. trailerable motor boat and we loved the area. It was our first time, but are planning to return next summer. Bayfield is very nice , lots of good food, nice people, great marinas and the islands are spectacular.Several lighthouses, seacaves, and natural beauty. We slept in our boat so cannot recommend inns or B&B's. Madeleine Island is a nice stop for a couple of hours, maybe lunch and browse at the very few shops.

Enjoy!!!!!
