first time in the dells

we will be going to the dells in either may or june of this year.

we would like to stay in a cabin, but not sure where to begin to look.

would like to do some hiking, outdoors stuff, maybe horseback riding etc...

any suggestions on where to stay in cabins, what to do etc?

this would be greatly appreciated.

You might want to check out Birchcliff Resort on River Road north of downtown. It has cabins in the woods and hiking access to the Upper Dells.

There's a nice short hike at Dells of the Wisconsin River state natural area, leading to a secluded beach on the Wisconsin River in the Upper Dells. The truly great hiking is just south of Baraboo at Devil's Lake State Park (for a great day, do the 10-mile hike on the park's East Bluff Trail and the Ice Age National Scenic Trail to Parfrey's Glen state natural area).

You can go horseback-riding at Canyon Creek stables in Lake Delton and rent kayaks or canoes at Lake Delton Watersports. Be sure to take one of the narrated Dells Boat Tours, too, particularly of the Upper Dells.

I've noticed a lot of places doing specials over the first weekend in June when they are having the "taste of dells" celebration thing. Might be a good time to save some $$.
