First trip to Wyoming - Need Advice for Family Vacation

Hi. We are a family of 4 (14 year old daughter; 20 year old son) planning a July trip to the Jackson area. Accommodation location is confusing - do we want to stay in or near Jackson, Jackson Hole or Teton Village? We plan to visit one if not both Yellow Stone and the Tetons, horseback ride etc. but will avoid fishing and white water rafting. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. We love the Southwest and have visited Arizona and New Mexico so mountains and exploring the outdoors in Wyoming seems to be a perfect vacation. Thank you in advance for your advice. - Gayle

Your kids are about the same age as mine were the first year we went to GT and YNP. I would stay a couple of days in Jackson Hole for GT and then stay in YNP if you like in park setting and if not stay in West Yellowstone. That is what we did for our first trip because kids wanted internet and TV. Do a float trip on Snake River in GT. It is not whitewater and you have great scenery and wildlife. Just take your time and explore YNP. It is in a giant 8 in terms of routes. See Old Faithful, Mammoth, Lamar and Hayden Valleys, and Artist Point. Enjoy your trip planning.

Hi Gayle,

It appears that you are a bit confused, so I'll try to help you out. First of all Jackson, and Jackson Hole are really the same place. Without going into the whole story, the two names are often used interchangeably, but for tourism purposes, it's basically the same place. Teton Village on the other hand is not really a village, the way most people think of a village as a small town. Teton Village is the name of the community of condos and restaurants at the base of the runs for the ski complex, about 13 miles west of jackson.

You have some good advice above. Jackson is a great base for visiting Grand Teton National Park, but due to the driving distances involved, it's not ideal as a base for Yellowstone. You would be better advised to try for lodging inside Yellowstone, or in West Yellowstone as Ce Ce suggested.

Here is the link to Xanterra, the only authorized concessionaire for in-park lodging and dinning in YNP.

www.nps.gov/yell/planyourvisit.htm is another good site with all sorts of information useful for your trip planning.

i think you would enjoy a couple of nights in jackson as it's a unique town with lots to do (great food, rodeo, shootout). as stated above it's convenient for visiting grand teton np.

one inexpensive thing to consider is to go by dornans at moose & rent a canoe. they will put it on your vehicle & it's very easy to take off & put on. putting in at jackson lake damn & out at pacific creek gives you 5 miles of one of the most beautiful views from the smooth water of the snake river at the base of the tetons.

as for visiting ynp it's probably too late for lodging inside the park. i would stay in the surrounding towns of gardiner or w.yellowstone. you can book horseback rides out of either area. one other place that we like staying (30 minutes out the north entrance) is chico hot springs. great place with lots to do (horseback rides, hiking, spa, hot springs, great restaurant).
