Yellowstone day trip form Jackson Hole

We are staying in Jackson Hole and want to visit Yellowstone for the day. I know this will make for a long day. Any suggestions on things to do would be great. We want to see Old Faithful and the Lodge. I would like to stay the night in Yellwostone or close by but everything seems to be full. Any higher end places to stay outside of park but close?

When are you coming to the parks? Keep checking on Xanterra because cancellations do occur. Just got my reservations at Old Faithful for September after checking for months.

Staying in West Yellowstone would offer you the best choice imo for out of the park lodging. We have stayed at the BW and Three Bear Lodge.

It's certainly possible to do a day trip from Jackson. We did it all the time when we lived there. It is a lot of driving though. Do check back for hotel cancellations as Peach Belle recommends. Otherwise...

There are two schools of thought when it comes to seeing a big place with limited time: try to see it all or go in depth on one part. I'm typically in the latter camp. If I have a half day to see a big museum, I will pick one section or find a interesting tour and just do that, rather than trying to see the whole thing. Others are worried about missing something and never getting another chance. So you need to decide what you want. You could spend the whole day in the Old Faithful section of the park. Or you could try and do the whole lower loop.

Here's one idea: Leave Jackson around 6am. Drive up to the Moran Entrance of Grand Teton National Park via Rte. 89. You'll get to the Jackson Lake Lodge a little before 7am (depending on where you are staying in Jackson). Stop here for nice breakfast in the Mural Room (you might make a reservation for this, maybe not necessary but better safe than sorry). This hotel is beautiful, historic, and has amazing views of the Teton Range. You'll probably see elk and/or moose out the restaurant windows. After breakfast, continue north on the park road and then the John D. Rockefeller Memorial Parkway. There are a few good photo opportunities here - Jackson Lake with the Tetons in the background and the YNP South entrance sign. Depending on how often you stop for photos or get stuck in bear jams, you'll get to the Old Faithful area about an hour and a half after you leave Jackson Lake Lodge - mid morning. Take some time to get out and explore here. Take a hotel tour. See if you can find a ranger-led activity. Take the short hike up to the geyser overlook and time it to reach the top for the next expected eruption of Old Faithful. Have an early lunch somewhere in the area - the main dining room at Old Faithful is beautiful (reservations recommended). There's also a deli in the Inn and there are cafeterias and other restaurants in the other hotels in the complex. After lunch, continue on the loop. There are few smaller geyser basins where you can get out and take some short walks to explore. The Fountain Paint Pots are especially interesting to see. Continue past Madison Junction to Norris, another geyser basin. Walk around here to take in the hot springs, geysers, etc. After Norris, go back to the lower loop and continue east toward the Canyon area. You might be hungry again so stop at the general store and get a snack. The little diner type place has great milk shakes. Then spend some time exploring the Canyon area. There are a couple different trails you can take for different views of the falls. The easiest and most famous is Artist's Point. The other trails also provide some spectacular views. Most are short but can be pretty steep. By this point it will probably be late afternoon. This is a pretty good time of day to drive south through Hayden Valley toward the Lake area. You will almost certainly see herds of bison and other animals as well. Stop for dinner at the Lake Yellowstone Hotel (make a reservation). This is a lovely, old fashioned dining room - very different from the Old Faithful Inn. Another option here is the cafeteria in the Lake Lodge building, around the corner from the Hotel. After dinner, drive back to the south entrance gate and out of the park. On your way home, take the GTNP park road (it's a right hand turn after you pass by the Jackson Lake Lodge complex). Enjoy the sunset (depending on the time of year) and Teton views on your drive back to Jackson - about 2.5 hours. Just watch out for animals!
