Which would be the best place for an overnight ...Sheridan or Buffalo or somewhere else.

We are planning to have 2 nights in West Yellowstone, 1 night in Cody then 1 night some where !!! before 2 nights in Custer...we are travelling in mid May....or could we travel easily from Cody to Custer in 1 day....any suggestions would be very helpful.

Both Sheridan and Buffalo are good places to overnight, although Sheridan is a lot bigger. Both have western downtowns. Buffalo has the historic Occidental Hotel.

The drive between Sheridan and Buffalo on rte 87 is interesting. During the Indian Wars, the army built several forts in this area

which was also the location of the Federman massacre.

Or ... you could drive on toward Custer, maybe stopping at Devil's Tower. If you want a little detour, take 14 or 16 to Ucross, through Spotted Horse and on to Gillette; this is a real pretty drive. As you get close to Gillette, you can pull off the road and look out over a surface coal mine, which is pretty interesting.

Sounds like you'll only have up to 2 days in YNP. Unsure, don't know arrival and departure times. Since you apparently have an extra day, if I understand you, I'd spend it in the park.

Agree with Voyaging. Spend another day in Yellowstone. You easily can drive in one day between Cody and Custer. It took us 6.5 hours with a short stop on our way but you won't have time to explore places like Devils Tower. 6.5 hours was a straight shot. Take us16 from I90 via Newcastle to Custer.

Thanks for that info...most helpful....still debating about another night in Yellowstone .....

I had been looking at several routes from Cody ..taking the alt 14 to Powellt then to Dayton./ Sheridan .as it looks a scenic route and the road should be open in May....or going to Greybull then to Sheridan ....is it worth the longer route ...I was thinking of spending the morning in and around Cody before setting off to the next stop and maybe see more of Yellowstone ...

From Sheridan or Buffalo we thought of going via Gillette then up to the Devils Tower then down the 585 to Four Corners then Newcastle then Custer......but I'm only looking at a map and some Internet sites plus you helpful people who use Trip Advisor.....with no real idea which are the best places to visit...

This is the way we usually plan these type of holidays and they usually turn out OK... some hits and some misses !!!

Just to let you know its lovely Spring weather here in Chester UK ..and all the blossom trees are superb...we need rain ..yes rain in the UK !!!! as we have had a really dry winter

>is it worth the longer route

14A is steeper than 14, but prettier if you don't mind pulling off the road frequently and looking back from where you've come. You get great views of the Big Horn basin to the west. 14A isn't open in winter, but should get open some time in May.

>Sheridan or Buffalo we thought of going via Gillette then up to the Devils Tower then down the 585 to Four Corners then Newcastle then Custer..

That works. But don't overnight in Newcastle if you can help it. Coal trains come through there all night from the Powder River Basin near Gillette (100 coals trains move out of Wyoming coal mines every day), and they blow their whistles at road crossings. No doubt the locals are used to this and sleep through it, but it can make for a poor night's sleep for visitors.

Actually there are no bad roads in that area. 14A is breathtaking. Devils Tower is a highlight imo so if you can find the time go for it. Choices, choices as always...

Thanks so much for that .....yes we'll take the Alt 14.....we have hired a full size car with a larger engine as last time we did a similar trip in South Africa we only had a compact car and not much power...or comfort...so on this trip we should be able to tackle such roads roads....

Thanks for your info and your tip about Newcastle ...yes we'll avoid it....we had an experience like Newcastle when we were in Rudesheim in Germany ...trains every 10 minutes and clanging sounds as the level crossing was being closed 3 minutes before the train went passed ....we had booked for 2 nights.!!!! what joy !!!!!
