Where to stay on the Big Island?

We are looking to come to Hawaii in June or July with our extended family (6 adults and 6 kids...aged 2 - 14). We want to do some "beach days" but also see other things The Big Island has to offer. Someone recommended staying in Captain Hook, but I am afraid that it will be to hard to get to many activities that will appeal to our younger family members. Any suggestions/advice is welcome.

Please see the many recent forum posts on this topic. Captain Cook is not a good base for most people, especially for larger families.it is very far from the island's beat beaches and requires long drives to most things. A condo is a good choice for families, although you will need at least two condos with 12 people. Look at the Kohala coast for best weather, access to beaches, and spacious family condos in a wide variety of price ranges.

Welcome to Trip Advisor TravelGirl..

Captain Cook wouldn't top my list for places to stay on the Island. It makes a nice day trip however when staying up in South Kohala.

You will want a place with AC for sure, given the time of your visit.

What is your nightly accommodation budget /night for each unit?

Two condos adjacent to each other should work nicely....and 3 vehicles.

South Kohala has many choices. at both Waikoloa beach Resort or Mauna Lani Resort. The area is known for clear blue skies, little rain and close proximity to the Island's best beaches.

I agree with Wanderlust...staying near beaches and dining choices will save a lot of driving.

That's a lot of misinformation. South Kona is not "preferred" for diving and snorkeling, there are more and more easily accessible snorkeling and diving sites north, plus they are in general far less crowded than at Kealakekua Bay and Honaunau Bay. There is also much more hiking and historical sites accessible from the Kohala Coast than from a Captain Cook base. Sounds like you haven't actually spent any time there if you think it's nothing but hotels and beaches.

Lastly "City of Refuge" is an offensive misnomer for Pu'uhonua O Honaunau.

Reads like someone with a financial interest in Captain Cook area rentals.
