Farmer's Market/Nightlife (or lack thereof)

We are leaving Hilo on a Saturday afternoon, so does anyone know if we will be able to take items from the Farmers Market aboard an inter-island flight?

Also, I read a post from a few months ago discussing the lack of nightlife in Hilo. This is fine since we aren't the clubbing type, but what can a group of 20-30 year olds do for one evening here? Are there any luaus to speak of? We can drive a little, but don't want to go all the way to Kona. Thanks very much!

well you can bring foods ( remember the liquid restriction) in small qualities on the flight... Id put them in checked baggage. Check the TSA. However if your going to another island they will have all the same stuff there..... ask your carrier the weight restrictions some are like 20 lbs.... before you get a hefty charge. Forget the carry on food. it is not worth the hassel

Hilo has a univeristy but is not a college town.... its a working town and container port.. There are several bars but most are pretty rough and local where non locals are not greeted with open arms.

There is a movie theater and your hotel bar and thats all I would suggest... get a good nights sleep

There is no place to drive within 120 miles at night and you dont want to drive here at night. And you sure as heck dont want to wander around the waterfront in Hilo after dark..... not real safe.

if you want live music/dancing, you can go to Paradise Grill which used to be Charlie's in Kea'au. About 5-10 minutes south off of Hwy 11.

Not aware of any decent lu'aus here.

Hilo has cultural events happening throughout the year, music at the Palace Theater (an art deco theater), UH Theater, and a few other places. Either search the big island calendars online or when you arrive pick up a copy of Hawai'i Island Journal -- free paper with a calendar of events that you'll find at every store, also a stack at Borders Books. In addition, special events are advertised on posters, one of best places to find posters is stretch of Bayfront shopping from Cafe Pesto down to Abundant Life health foods.

There could be reggae, Hawaiian music, various options.

Nichols Irish pub on Kilauea is supposed to be quite nice if you can find parking. Restaurant Kaikodo has a gorgeous bar -- bar was imported from a London pub and the restaurant is full of wonderful Asian art ... this is if you just want a quiet place to sit and talk and have a few (or a decadent dessert), nothing is really happening.

As for other places like Cronies Sports Bar, you can be the judge of whether it looks fun. It's on the Bayfront. If there's an event at the Palace Theater, that would be something you wouldn't find at home, so check it out!
