Please post on the generic State of Hawaii Forum. You have posted on a sub-forum for the Big Island of Hawaii.
Head over to Cruise Critic ( a 'sister site' of Tripadvisor) where you'll find lots of discussion on what everyone is doing on their port days in Hawaii: boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=62
You might also want to check out the Roll Calls there. That's where you can meet others who will be on your cruise.
Here's the link to the State of Hawaii forum which covers all of the islands: tripadvisor.ca/ShowForum-g28932-i36-Hawaii.h…
The most popular activity in Hilo would be Volcanos National Park. You can do this one yourselves as it's only a 45 minute drive. In Kona, there's snorkelling trips, coffee tours, or a beach excursion.
For any ports where you plan to do it yourself, rent your car early!
Kauai is a great island for a helicopter or fixed wing tour - can't drive around the entire island. I would also plan a day on the northshore of Kauai. :)
Other than driving ourselves can you suggest if there are private tours from the port, or public transit. Thanks
See the topic I just posted on the Hoppa On Hoppa Off Trolley in Hilo.
There are many tours to choose from, but tours that aren't offered as excursions by the cruise are no longer allowed to enter into the Hilo Port area to solicit, which I think is a shame. You will need to investigate the local tours on your own. There are too many to list, but they are reviewed on TA under the Things To Do tab on the green menu bar at the top of the page.
