Hilo Wins Voting Campaign for free downtown Paint Facelift

Yay, community pulling together put Hilo on the map to win a spot for a Benjamin Moore sponsored paint makeover of Main Street (Kamehameha Ave. for sure and maybe more). 20 communities out of 130 received over half a million online votes.

Our locally owned building supply company, HPM, and downtown organization leaders spearheaded a social media campaign to spread the word for Hilo. In Hawaiʻi, we beat out Haleiwa. Sorry, North Shore, Haleʻiwa is a very cool town.

I hope that the BM color consultants will take heed of the already beautiful color palette employed on the Cafe Pesto building and the former Kohnenʻs building. They will be working with Alice Moon, who organizes many downtown events, so I feel confident.

I haven't , and I've been wondering, as painting in winter is not wise in Hilo -- paint won't dry. Picking all the colors is going to take time though. I will update when I see some signs of prep work.

Right now there is a wooden chute slide in coming out of Koehnen's old home, which is a new thing. They must be stripping the interior. I hope it gets a good tenant. It's one of the handomest buildings.

Yes KK, let us know if you hear anything.

I looked up the Koehnen building online and you're right...so handsome. Along with the Palace Theater and the building that Cafe Pesto is in. Just so beautiful!

Those are my other favorites. The Kress Theaters is also historic, maybe a cool paint job ...

I think this is an earlier color scheme pic:

and this is now:

I prefer with more contrast to show the Art Deco features.

The old downtown post office is beautiful inside, if you like the old buildings, worth a look. It was originally the federal building, dates from the early 20ʻs.

On Waianuenue at Kehaulike Street, above Keawe.

Hereʻs the pdf map of the walking tour of Hilo

And hereʻs a page on downtown Hilo from a nonprofit devoted to info on downtown Hilo and environs.

People who only see the car dealerships and big box and fast food along Hwy 11, see a very different Hilo from the beautiful Art Deco front to the old downtown that I see whenever I roll into town.

Posted one month ago:

"The “revitalization package” will run a two or three block stretch in downtown Hilo which will be determined at a later date. A package from Benjamin Moore Co. is on its way with the details!! "

KK, that Hilo First Friday looks great! You should post it as a different topic so it gets the attention it deserves.
