I believe the entry fee is $10/car, good for 7 days.

The best time to see lava is when you're lucky enough to catch a surface outbreak. And it IS luck of the draw. If it's flowing visibly, go before dark and stay until after dark. Please be aware that the flow is totally unpredictable, even day to day, much less in the future.

You don't say when your trip will be, but unless it's summer you'll want long pants and probably a jacket in Volcano. It can be cold and damp.

Make sure you stop ant the Visitors Center, our park rangers are the best ever and they give tours through out the day.

This is the topic for discussing all things pertaining to lava viewing. It is too much to go over it all again for each person who is interested in seeing lava, so hope you will read this topic.

There is no lava flowing in the VNP, and hasn't been for three years, but there is a glow and a plume at the summit crater. Check out the maps of the flow linked at the USGS site. They show exactly where the lava is.
