Rent a car! Really you will be fine and have a more relaxing time on your own. As a caveat we are not folks who like to be put into busses and TOLD where we could stop or hike! We've done it numerous times on our own and loved it!

There are some very nice private tours, and in those the operators take you where you want to go rather than the other way around, but you pay for that.

Here is some pricing for Volcano Discovery tours:

-$525 flat rate for 1-3 and $175 per person for a 6-hr tour with Hilo/Volcano pick-up, or

-$825 flat rate for 1-3 and $275 per person for a 10-hr tour with Kona pick-up.

This includes all taxes, contribution to the Kalapana ohana, fresh local fruits, snacks, juices and water before and after the tour, and all the other personal service. They bring extra gas masks, water, walking sticks, tripods, batteries, & 1st aid, and include picture presentations of the history of the community as well as the history and current update of the eruption.

Right now they are offering a slightly discounted rate at $450 flat rate for 6-hr ($150 per person) out of Hilo/Volcano, or $750 flat rate for 10-hr ($250 per person) out of Kona.

This private tour will get you to the flowing lava.

You do not need a guide simply to get to VNP, waterfalls, and certainly not Banyan Drive, but you do need either a group or private guide to see the lava at Kalapana -- at this time. Who knows where the lava will be in April though.
