Driving from Kona to Volcano

Which is the fastest way to drive, north, south or central? I also heard that you can't take a rental car on the central road.

Fastest from Kona to Volcano will be the southern route at about 2-1/2 hours thru Captain Cook. Its the most direct route but kinda ugly in spots. Black Sand Beach 30 minutes out side of Volcano is a nice leg stretcher stop.

By central road you mean the Saddle Road? It's suitable for rental cars but many rental companies such as Alamo will not come to you aid or tow you from that road so have plenty of gas. When in doubt ask your rental company before you leave the check out counter. If you pick that route and really rainy and foggy its best to continue to Waimea then head east then back south thru Hilo which will cost you probably another hour vs. the direct route.

That route along the Hamakua Coast is worth a full day to see the side trips so if you are doing a day trip to Volcano keep that in mind that your likely going to be blowing past allot of fun stuff vs. looping the island for maybe 4 days is enought time to see everything w/ maybe 3 nights in Volcano or Hilo.

We drove the 19 highway from Kona and around the entire island one day to go the botanical gardens, then drove back 2 days later to visit the volcano. You must stop at the black sand beach. That was the prettiest beach I have ever seen!

We drove through Waimea stopped at a cool coffee shop and a couple of little local boutiques, through Hilo (Hilo seemed run down ...but considering all they've gone through, it's understandable....not too friendly to tourists either) to the Volcano, hiked 4.5 miles and drove back in pouring rain to Hilo, turned up the Saddle Highway, hit fog and rain, but nice change of scenery.... It was slightly shorter but does get a little dicey toward the kona/kailua side ...the road is narrow, not balanced and has several single lane bridges.

The Volcano is WELL worth any drive.
