Puako

Is this small area closer to Kona or to Kohala Coast?

It's actually on the Kohala Coast, about one hour from Kailua-Kona.

It's on the Kohala coast, south of Hapuna and north of Mauna Lani/Waikoloa resorts. One road in and out so although south end of Puako is a short (15 min or less) walk to the Fairmont Orchid, the drive is just as long.

Suggest you look at Google maps. There is a small genreal store, but groceries and restaurants are a drive away. There is beach access at Waialea but the shoreline is lava shelf--not the easiest or safest water access in most places in Puako.

I really like Puako, but it is not the easiest place for a first time visitor.

Puako is an interesting mix of VERY high end to basic (maybe even a few sub-basic) ohana type rentals. It is very out of the way, so keep in mind you will be driving to most things, it is a lovely area.

Puako is very convenient to Hapuna or other 'Waikoloa beaches about 5 to 10 minutes drive away. Kona is about 45 minutes drive. A nice loop drive would be up to Waimea to Hawi and back along coast about 2 hours drive time. If you want easy drive to nice beaches then yes Puako could be a good choice.

The loop drive should be done the other way, take the coast road to Hawi and than the Kohala Mountain Road to Waimea. The scenery is much nicer driving this way, including the descent to Waimea.

I prefer crossing Kohala Mountain drive in the morning cause its less likely to be rainy/foggy in the morning. Definitely arrive at Pololu Valley overlook early if you are walking to the bottom cause the limited parking is very tight.
