good question.......what we always do, no matter time of year is look at the ocean conditions....you could also check with the life guards at Haena Beach Park, or Ke'e as well as the website for kauai Explorer beach report.

In october from tunnels and haena area on up to ke'e there can be an extremely stong long shore current...will it be occuring when you are there, maybe, maybe not.

What does it look like ? The current will be running like small fast rapids parallel to the beach in a direction toward Ke'e. It is extremely fast and we just stay out of those conditions. No human is going to be able to swim into it. It is extremely strong.

Normal summer time......there is a much slower current, same direction that we use at tunnels to drift snorkel slowly along the reef enjoying the marine life with very little finning.

Standing on tunnels beach, we walk to the far right for some distance, then enter the water and drift snorkel up to just past tunnels, exit, and walk back for another drift but cover a different section mabe closer in, or further out from the beach.

One day it can be like a bathtub and the next day (or next beach) can be rough. There are many calm areas almost all fall like Hanalei Bay and Anini Beach. I used to go frequently in October and I had many days out near Haena or Ke'e where it would be windy and rough but I could still go in the water if the lifeguards said it was fine. Watch for the ever changing currents.
