Hanalei Bay closed today until further notice - shark...

Aloha from Kaua'i!

For those of you on island - I just received this update from the County of Kaua'i about Hanalei Bay:

Hanalei Bay closed due to shark sightings--

HANALEI – Ocean Safety officials have closed Hanalei Bay to swimming until further notice due to shark sightings.

Lifeguards reports that two large sharks were sighted roughly a hundred feet from shore fronting a surf spot known as “Pine Trees.”

‘No Swimming’ signs have been posted along the beach and the public is advised to stay out of the water until further notice.

The beach will remain closed until at least tomorrow morning.

For updates visit http://www.kauaiexplorer.com or call the Ocean Safety Bureau at 241-4984.

***********************************

Usually these are short term closings, but it is worthwhile noting here for anyone who is currently on vacation .....

That was our favorite spot last summer and looking forward to next summer. Won't tell my kids :) they aren't there in the summer anyways, right? Lol. We keep looking for the reef sharks at Tunnels but haven't been lucky enough to see one yet. From a distance of course!

Thanks for the info but I so wish I didn't see it. We just moved to Princeville from Florida and Hanalei Bay is my favorite place in the world. I was just commenting to my girlfriend yesterday as we lay on the beach at Hanalei bay, "I just feel so much safer in the water here than Florida", which the area we were from was notorious for sharks.

I cut back on my swimming alot in Florida because of my fear of the sharks. Now I have this to think about. Sigh. I planned on swimming every day for the rest of my life in that bay :)

I'll try not to get too spooked. How often this kinda thing happen?

We don't see sharks all that often, and attacks are rare. Much more common in FL.

Aloha from Kaua'i!

It happens, but it doesn't happen often - don't worry about it.

Just be aware of ocean conditions wherever you go - and that means checking with lifeguards or calling the weather/ocean conditions phone number here of 245-6001 (updated several times a day) - or visiting this webpage to check conditions around the island:

http://www.kauaiexplorer.com/ocean_report/

When you enter the ocean you are sharing it with many ocean creatures - including sharks - shark attacks here are rare indeed, and not something to stress about at all.

The sharks are out there, fact of life, but you have WAY more chance of being killed in a car accident, than you do from a shark. Do you still drive or ride in a car? Of course. Here's the state's shark guide:

You're in much better shape than in Florida where the vicious bull sharks come in large groups and quite close to shore. You won't have to worry about bull sharks at least.

The Bay reopened the next morning (Nov 20)

These posts would be much improved if "Today" were replaced with the actual date as they get stale
