what's the cheapest way to see Na Pali coast?

My wife and I are vacationing on a budget in Kauai and Oahu. And we heard lots of great things about Na Pali. We'd rather not pay $150+ a person for a boat tour. Any other alternatives?

Hiking is the cheapest, but not everyone can do the entire length of the rugged trail. Next cheapest would be a boat trip, and then most expensive, fixed wing or helicopter tour. :)

If you want to see it from above, Wings Over Kauai is a good way to see it and not pay as much as a helicopter ride.

I hate to advise this but if you take a timeshare tour (2 hours wasted from one's life) you can get a 2 for 1 boat tour.

Here's the price and info on WOK

Hiking at least the 2 miles is a good suggestion but its a tease.

we're already planning on doing the 2 mile hike to the beach but like you said, that'd be a tease only.

http://www.napalikayak.com/ No, the tours stop at the end of Sept. You can see beautiful views of Kalalau Valley at Pu'u o Kila Lookout in Waimea Canyon.

Beware of timeshare tours. They can take much more than the 90 minutes they promise, and you could end up making a bad decision that you'll regret. Here's some horror stories:

You can hike the Alakai swamp trail (in Koke'e /Waimea canyon) and -if you're lucky - you'll have an amazing view at the end looking down into Kalalau valley. Bonus - the Alakai Swamp is pretty cool too.

I just ran the Kaalou 3 times last week. If you hike the two miles it might be enough for you. The other option is take a one way boat ride out and hike the 11 miles back in.

You have not mentioned your physical condition that would definitely be important for kayaking the 17 miles of the napali and that would take spending about the same amount of money for Capt. Andy. The reason is that no one is going to rent you a kayak to ocean paddle the 17 miles of the Napali on your own.

Same goes for hiking the KALALAU TRAIL, the real one into the kalalau valley, , not just the hanakapiai trail for the first two miles to hanakapiai beach. There are a couple of view points from the hanakapiai trail, but nothng like seeing the Napali from a boat.

If you want to see the Napali coast, you will need to take one of the ocean tours, if you wish to do a circle island tour by air, you need to fly fixed wing or by helicopter.

Your other options are doing some hiking, and you should read up on those hikes and understand what the difficulties, disntances , times, and how to be prepared . Hiking guides or the Ultimate Kauai Guide book are excellent references.

No kayaking tours in late Oct. WAY too dangerous. Plus, even in the calmest waters, it is a one way trip down the coast so you would need two cars or pay $$$ for a pickup. Going back clockwise is super tough against the trades and currents.

"You can hike the Alakai swamp trail (in Koke'e /Waimea canyon) and -if you're lucky - you'll have an amazing view at the end looking down into Kalalau valley"

The valley at the end of the swamp trail is not Kalalau. You get some great views right at the beginning of the Pihea trail. The view at the end of the Alakai trail is Kilohana valley and Hanalai Bay, if your lucky.
