Weather and flights from Kauai to Honolulu

My husband and I will be flying to Australia in late July and plan a stopover in Kauai. If our flight leaves Honolulu on August 2nd, are we taking a risk of getting stranded and missing our flight if we book our return from Kauai to Honolulu on August 1st? Being from Chicago, we are used to bad weather and flight delays. We'd like to maximize our time in Kauai but don't want to get stranded. Thanks in advance for considering our question.

Barring a hurricane or earthquake, there aren't any weather issues that would delay a flight from Kauai to Honolulu. Just make sure you use Hawaiian Airlines for your best chance of not having a problem.

Delays are rare if you're flying Hawaiian. Book tickets as soon as you can for the lowest fares and most convenient times.

Considering that the majority of vacationers to Kauai book their flight back to HNL for just 2-3 hours before their flights back to the mainland depart I'd say you're quite safe in flying an entire day before to HNL.

As said, just make sure it's on Hawaiian airlines. They have the most flight options in case anything should hapen.
