Dinner recommendations in Lihue

Hi, we're staying at the Marriott in Lihue and don't want to eat at the resort (bad reviews, overpriced). Any recommendations for restaurants close by? We have a car but don't want to drive too far for dinner because we will be out doing various activities/exploring during the day and will be tired.

Duke's is right next door as is Cafe Portifino. Both good. Across the street is Feral Pig and Kalpaki Joes. Close by in Lihue is Kauai Pasta, Gaylords, Humura's Saimin.

Very few places on Kaua‘i are going to care how you look or how you're dressed if you're worried about needing to return to the hotel (from activities/exploring) before going to have dinner. Most places are just "come as you are"

I don't think her concerns is appearance...more convenience due to being tired.

Stop for dinner on the way back to the hotel is my point.

Well there is nothing wrong with Kukui's but it is a bit expensive though no more so than Duke's Canoe Club (upstairs). Kalapaki Grill is really just a bar and the other little spot at the Marriott is little more than a breakfast coffee shop place. Most consider Duke's to be at the Marriott, heck even the Marriott includes it on the onsite dining list... though it's just up the beach next to the Italian spot Cafe Portifino mentioned above. Other places across the street and beyond. Depends where you are, so as mentioned already stop on the way back or walk over to Duke's and wait 15 mins or so for a table.

If you want excellent Mexican food and some of the best fish tacos ever, try Monico's. http://monicostaqueria.com/ For sushi and good Japanese food, try Kintaro Restaurant which is just north of Monico's.

Another spot on the south end of town just off Puhi Rd is Mark's Place open til 8pm but closed weekends... it's in an industrial area and just a little diner place with no inside seating.

Not into sushi that much so I forgot about Toro Tei ... this is one that you can skip at the Marriott.

Duke's Barefoot Bar (downstairs of the restaurant). Casual, beachfront, right next to the Marriott. Cafe Portofino is good but overpriced, in my opinion.
