Restaurants in Poipu

We are coming back to Kauai for our 30th wedding anniversary, staying for 10 days at the Waoihai Beach Club in Sept. Although we will have a kitchen, I'm not planning on doing a whole lot of cooking. What restaurants can you recommend for Poipu beach area and beyond? Any spectacular suggestions for our anniversary dinner? (a Tuesday) Closest grocery store? Place to rent or purchase snorkel equipment? We will have a car.

For a special dinner I would want to go to Merrimans or Beach House.

The closest grocery store is in Koloa and its called Big Save. Renting snorkel equipment is at Brenneckes, Boss Frogs, Nukumoi Beach Surf Shop across from Poipu Beach and Snorkel Bobs in Koloa.

Casa di Amici used to have fantastic northern Italian dishes when they were up on the north shore. have not been there in some time.

Closest full grocery store is the Big Save in Koloa. Snorkel gear rental - Snorkel Bob's in Koloa. There is a place in Po'ipu that rents gear, but they advocate feeding the fish by advertising their fish food, which is absolutely WRONG. Please do not feed the fish...it can make them very aggressive, especially the trigger fish....Google trigger fish bite (images) and you'll see what I mean.

I love Keoki's Paradise..they have pretty good Happy Hour. http://www.keokisparadise.com/

They are even better now! It's a fun, casual place and the new owners have made some great improvements. Not a place for an anniversary dinner (I personally would choose Plantation Gardens for that) but definitely worth a visit. We also love Tortilla Republic.

For special anniversary dnner.....this is resort priced places..our choices that we repeat:

No paticular order:

Out of poipu area....

the best on the island: HUKILAU LANAI in Kapa'a.

and a few minutes drive from poipu.....

Fun Paniolo style, with great steaks and prime rib KALEHEO STEAK HOUSE in kaleheo...western cowboy style, great band on thrs and sunday nights ( reservations ).

OASIS at the Waipoli Resort up in Kapa'a.

Other poipu favorites:

La Spezia ( Koloa Town )

Tortilla Republic ( Kukui ula shopping village

Keokis Paradsie ( Poipu Shopping Village....for the early bird sunset special )

Casa Di Amici ( Latest... brand new changing of the guard, old well known manager......in the last couple of months)

Kalapaki Joes

Merrimans downstairs

Benneckes up stairs and now they have entertainment.

Honu tiki bar at your resort.....out by the beach and pool, with a grille next to the bar.

And the best happy hour with low prices and great pours, 4 pm at Pizetta'a back bar, in Koloa Town.

The above are places that we return to, and have always had a good everything.

I can't suggest anything for your special dinner, but for a casual meal, I recommend Savage Shrimp and Bubba's Burgers in the shopping district at Lawai Road and Poipu Road. "Downtown" Koloa is a short drive down the highway from Poipu; you can find two grocery stores there.

Savage Shrimp, Merrimans, Josselins, etc are all in Kukui'ula Shopping Village. Lapperts is there, too and Uncle's Shave Ice, which is pretty good!

Also in there is Dolphin. I'm not that keen on it for dinner, but it is fantastic for lunch, good sushi, and terrific ambience throughout the entire "mall". It is simply lovely, laid-back Hawaii at it's best.

I would choose Plantation Gardens for your special evening also. Beautiful. Ask for a table on the lanai. Arriving while the sun is still up so you are dining through dusk and enjoying the tiki lights makes for a very lovely evening.

Groceries - try Sueoka's for your fresh before hitting Big Save. If they have it, it is usually good quality and a good price. They also have some to-die-for cakes and pies on the bottom shelf at the front end of the coolers. You really don't want to miss those.
