Maui Sands - Affordable but Beach Access?

Checking out Maui Sands as it appears to be only affordable option for our family of four this mid-Thanksgiving November. Reading reviews, sounds like there may be beach access issues. Got a 3 yo and a 10 yo...beach is key!

On Google Maps, Honokowai Beach Park appears to be "steps" away. True?

If anyone has stayed here, would you think it unfriendly to toddlers & kids in the pool?

THANKS in advance, SactoSteph (1st timer to Maui)

Aloha,

Steph, as I posted before--give us your budget, in dollars per night! We can help you far better if we have something to work from. Are you arriving before Thanksgiving-during the weekend-how long are you staying.......all q's that will help.

Yes, Honokawai Beach Park is close to Maui Sands, but the complex wouldn't be my first choice. But I don't want to rec places you can't afford, either.

Help us help you!

There is pretty much no beach at this property. There is an inner reef right up to the seawall and exposed at low tide. There is also an outer reef about 100 yards out. Snorkling not worth the trouble.

Many of the units here are occupied by owners/renters. The pool area is near the back and while pleasant, nothing special. Grounds are fairly green and lush, which is nice. But unless an owner has upgraded the unit, they are still pretty oldish, having been built in the 60's.

Laundry is centralized in another building, not the units. Parking a bit tight.

Honokawai Beach Park has no beach of interest either, BTW. We had a picnic dinner there watching the sunset in August.

In general, if beach is important to you, this isn't the place to stay if you are looking for walk out to the sand.

We just looked at a couple of units for sale at Maui Sands.

Nice mature grounds, two stories and oceanfront little deck.

There was a beach wide enough to walk on but the water

looked pretty shallow.

This area has beaches that come and go.

Some units have washer and dryers. They are individually

owned so the ammenities vary.

Shop this site, with aerials and reviews of almost every lodging in Hawaii: www.wizardpub.com

Some less expensive places are Kahana, Maalea and Kihei. Many young families stay across from the Kamaole Beach Parks in South Kihei. Using the wizardpub site, start with Maui Vista and work south to be walking distance to these good beaches.
