The only real impact the cruise ship traffic has is right at the lower end of Main Street and the bus traffic along the Park Loop Road. For the most part, cruise ship guests don't usually hike or bike so the hiking trails and carriage paths don't have many people on them at all. If you are driving up 95, I don't think you will experience much traffic at all, especially north of Portland where there isn't really heavy traffic even in the middle of August. Restaurants are still really busy so I would make reservations for your dinners. You can make most reservations the day of but many people are finding they cannot get into the restaurant they want without a reservation at dinnertime. I would only expect to get busier as we go into October, not less busy. The leaves have begun changing so that will bring in more leaf peepers.

The traffic is generally lighter in October *but* you are talking about Saturday, October 9, Columbus Day weekend, the last hurrah of a very busy season. I would leave the Boston area by 8am at the latest and travel with an EZ Pass for the tolls. Have a great trip - October is beautiful and it looks like we will be at peak foliage by then, at least here in Bass Harbor.
