bar harbor or Cape Cod

We are going to Boston by RV for the 4th. We then have to pick between Bar Harbor and Cape Cod. Which should we pick and why? We also have a jeep with us.

1. Re: bar harbor or Cape Cod

The basic difference is that much of the Cape Cod area is windswept sand beaches and dunes whereas Bar Harbor/Mount Desert Island/Acadia National Park is mountains that run down to the sea (mostly rocky shores).

Acadia has about 45 miles of carriage roads (no motorized vehicles) and 115 miles of hiking trails that range from easy to challenging.

Both places are very busy over the period of the 4th (I presume that you meant July 4). From what I've heard, it is easier to get to/from MDI than it is for Cape Cod, but I have no first-hand experience with which to make a comparison.

I'm probably biased since I now live in Maine, but I grew up and lived in Massachusetts most of my life and vacationed on Cape Cod many years.. Even before becoming a Mainer I was fed up with the traffic congestion on Cape Cod in the summer months. Fourth of July week is particularly bad.

Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island will be busy too around the 4th but not nearly so crushingly so. It's a stunningly gorgeous area. Also, take an easy day trip up to Jonesport (and Machias too) to see a fishing village more away from the tourist traffic. From there, drive out to Beals Island and Great Wass Island too. Magnificently beautiful spots.

Would agree with CW's comments above -- it boils down to what kind of visit are you looking for? Beaches or rocky coast?

Have visited both Cape Cod and Bar Harbor/Acadia over various Fourth of July weekends..... besides the geography, I'd sum up the differences as follows:

-- Cape Cod will give you major (think a couple of hours of two-lanes each way stop-and-go) traffic just getting onto or off the Cape from the mainland -- only two bridges over the Cape Cod Canal and one major route down the middle of the Cape..... Except for the National Seashore area, heavy commercialism and much larger crowds.... but some great expanses of sandy beach that you won't find in Bar Harbor.

-- Bar Harbor/Acadia will also give you heavy traffic at times around the 4th... slow moving, but moving traffic down the one major route from Ellsworth and across the only bridge onto the island.... But rocky coastlines topped with evergreens that you'll never find on the Cape. Downtown Bar Harbor can get busy, but nowhere nearly as crowded as some of the downtowns on the Cape.

-- Not sure what the RV situation is like on the Cape, but do know there are several campgrounds to choose from around Bar Harbor and Acadia. But I'd still reserve my spot early, especially over the 4th.....
