Are you bringing your own kayaks? Ocean kayaks? If you book a full or half day with one of the kayak companies, they will chose the best place to kayak on that day. Two of the companies have vans and boat trailers. They can take you to the best put-in place.

The waters and weather in Frenchman Bay and around Mount Desert Island can be very changeable. One needs to know the tide, the wind, and the other boat traffic. Fog can come up very quickly and disorient a paddler.

If you are bringing your own kayaks, I'd launch on the sand bar at the end of Bridge Street in Bar Harbor and stay close to land as you paddle in Frenchman Bay or near the Porcupine Islands.

If you are bringing your own kayaks, I would kayak on Great Long Pond. It's very calm and safe. National Park Canoe and Kayak rental is located right on the North end of Long Pond so you can also rent for them. If you want to go out into the Bay, then I would kayak with either National Park Kayak or Aquaterra Adventures. Both are great companies, very safe.

Thank you. We would have to rent the kayaks. The pond sounds safe.
