Thinking of making a vacation trip to Acadia NP area

Any suggestions for early 60's couple who need to get away and enjoy a unique seaside vacation?

We love the National Parks and Acadia is a dream vacation.

We would love to stay on the bay or on the ocean, but having difficulty finding that around Acadia.

Also there in early October so there for fall color. Any suggestions for touring after the NP or before staying there for a beautiful and inspiring foliage drive?

We are Texans and this will be a new experience going to Maine!

I'm not sure why you are having difficulty finding lodging on the bay or the ocean in the Acadia region. There is the Bar Harbor Inn, Harborside Hotel, Atlantic Oceanside, the Bayview, Saltair, and others -- all on the water in the Bar Harbor area. There is the Kimball Terrace Inn and the Asticou Inn on the water in Northeast Harbor. There is the Claremont on the water in Southwest Harbor.

You can do day trips from Acadia to see more fall color. Down to Camden, Maine would make a good trip. On the way to Camden, the view from the top of the Penobscot Narrows Bridge or from Mount Battie would be very colorful. Depending on where you are coming from and how long you are staying, you could see the White Mountains of New Hampshire which are usually spectacular with fall color. But that is more than a day trip from Acadia.

Thank you bonniemaev,

The only difficulty in finding a room on the water is that I'm not that familiar with the area at all, so I will use your suggestions, and thank you.

Day trips are good or we might try your suggestions for fall colors in NH. With our air miles, we can fly into and out of any airport, so we don't have to stick close to Bar Harbor once we've see the sights there.

Any other suggestions are always welcome!

We spent a few days in the Acadia area last Oct. and are going back again this year. We chose to stay in Southwest Harbor, "the quiet side" of the island and were so happy that we did! While we did head over to Bar Harbor one afternoon (when there were only 3 cruise ships in town!), we found everything we needed close by to our B&B. We stayed at The Birches in Southwest Harbor and felt that we had found the perfect get-away location. Not only does the innkeeper prepare wonderful breakfasts, she is extremely helpful with local activities and day trip suggestions including hiking, shopping, & restaurants. The inn is on the water. The grounds are lovely and you can walk down to the dock to view the sunrise. We hiked a different trail every day, all within a short drive or walk from the inn.

We stopped in Stonington, ME and would recommend it for a day trip. You can watch the local fishing boats come in while dining on the terrace.
