What to eat besides lobster

My wife and I are planning a vacation stay in Bar Harbor for 4 nights in July. We will obviously eat lobster but were wondering what other types seafood is popular and in season. Coming from the midwest we aren't sure what to ask for.

Maine shrimp (which are much smaller than gulf shrimp), mussels (which are farmed nearby), scallops, crab (both stone crab and another kind called peeky toe climb into the lobster traps and are kept and marketed), a number of different kinds of fish including tuna and farmed salmon.

The one thing that you probably are not going to see is freshwater fish (walleye, catfish, bluegill, etc.). I enjoy the occasional lobster at places like Thurston's and on rare occasions cook it at home. Also at home, I sometimes prepare Atlantic salmon, which has a somewhat milder flavor than the West Coast salmonids. In many of the restaurants here, you will find mussels---mostly all locally grown/harvested---and given our excellent cold water environment are mild, sweet, and delicious. Many times, a fairly generous salad and a bowl of mussels is a sufficient dinner for me. Generally, you will find them with some variation of a white wine and herb broth although a few places sometimes offer a marinara-type sauce.

Atlantic halibut is occasionally landed here---another excellent fish. It usually will appear as a special, meaning that someone brought a big one in that day.

Most restaurants here pride themselves on preparing seafood; they do it very well. It helps, of course that everything is fresh.

I might add that I grew up in the Midwest (Wisconsin). I never really appreciated seafood until we moved here.

Bon appetite.
