Seacoast NH to Bar Harbor stop

Hello, My family and I are driving the 4 hourst to Bar Harbor this summer (first time) and would like to stop about 2 hours into the drive for lunch and a little break. Augusta looks like a good halfway point but not much to do there. Any suggestions? Thank you!

Not sure I'd write off Augusta quite so quickly if the timing works for you.... if the weather is good, take the five minute ride down US Rt 202 to Hallowell.... on the north or south end of the business district, you'll find the Kennebec River Rail Trail... a hard-surfaced pedestrian-bicycle path that parallels the banks of the Kennebec River.... great place to stretch your legs and experience the river environment -- sightings of bald eagles and osprey are frequent, as are other local "critters." Numerous good choices for lunch in Hallowell or Augusta depending on what you're looking for.... Or if you don't want to go that far afield, check out historic Fort Western next door to Augusta City Hall... one of the earliest stockade forts built back when Maine was being explored by the British. Open for visitors with re-enactors and other folks on-site to explain what life in the fort was like "back in the day". (Google it to check operating hours.)

If the weather isn't so good, check out the Maine State Museum in the Cultural Building next door to the State House (would Google their website to check their operating hours first).... not a typical glass-case, "don't touch" museum -- includes sections of an old coastal schooner, a restored track-driven steam-powered log hauler, live fish exhibits, and a restored three-story, belt-driven sawmill....
