Arcadia National Park from Cruise Ship

Hello,

We dock into Bar Harbor on Brilliance of the Seas - 14 October 2014 (7am - 5pm). We would like to spend the day exploring Arcadia NP, the ship has tours however they are of course overpriced. How would we be best to go about exploring the park independently?

I look forward to hearing your suggestions on best mode of transport, key highlights etc

Cheers!

If you would simply enjoy a lower-priced, narrated tour of Acadia National Park, you can book online with Oli's Trolley: http://www.olistrolley.com/ It's an easy walk from where the tender from your ship will drop you off to where the bus tour leaves. There are 156 reviews of Oli's Trolley here on tripadvisor. They have a longer tour, two and a half hours, or several shorter tours. The long tour is $30 per person.

If you would like to be able to take some short hikes and spend some time at the various areas in Acadia like Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, Otter Cliffs, and Jordan Pond, then you can use the Island Explorer free shuttle buses. You are asked to buy a pass to Acadia which is just $5 for those who walk or bus into the park. ($20 for a car and passengers, good for a week).

To use the shuttle buses you would walk up Main Street for about four blocks to the Bar Harbor Village Green where the buses all start and end their various routes: http://www.exploreacadia.com/ You can get on and off the bus where ever you want. Unfortunately, though, the bus does not go to the top of Cadillac Mountain so you would miss that. The propane motors that the buses use cannot make it up the mountain.

If it were me, I think I would take the one hour Oli's Trolley Tour (just $16 for an adult), have lunch in Bar Harbor some place, and then take the shuttle bus over to Sand Beach, explore and walk along the rocky shore to Otter Cliff. Catch a shuttle bus from there back to Bar Harbor. If you feel alright about your time, you could take another bus over to Jordan Pond and explore that area, maybe take the hour's walk around the Pond and have tea and popovers on the lawn, if the place isn't too busy.

Thanks bonniemaev!

I think we will go with the Oli's tour at 10am in the morning & do as you suggest head over to Jordan Pond via the Island Explorer in the afternoon. I had a look at the Island Explorer and cant see anything about their timetables for October it says until August 2014, I am assuming they would still run in October? http://www.exploreacadia.com/route5.htm

If you look at the schedule here http://www.exploreacadia.com/route5.htm you'll see that the shaded times continue until Columbus Day which is October 13th this year. The buses do not run after that date. I'm afraid you'll be a day too late.

Oh no wasn't sure what date Columbus Day was!

So I have booked Oli's tour in the morning we should be finished at 12.30, would you suggest another way to get to Jordans Pond or anything else we should do to fill in the afternoon in Bar Harbor?
