Protest/Counter-Protest

Without getting political, Saturday's planned alt-right protest and the progressive counter-protest may affect a lot of visitors.

Things to know:

The Alt-Right rally is planned for Crissy Field, near the Golden Gate Bridge.

hoodline.com/2017/08/national-park-service-i…

The entire police force will be on active duty that day.

sfgate.com/news/article/Hundreds-of-cops-to-…

The mayor, city supervisors, and community activists will hold their own counter-rally at Civic Center.

So, if you want to avoid it all, avoid those areas.

Otherwise, expect rideshare to potentially be sparse. Lyft has issued safety warnings to their drivers - and it sounds as if many may avoid the area completely.

I would also avoid the Marina District as the Crissy Field folks will likely spill out there as well. Includes Palace of Fine Arts and also the Presidio (Disney Family Museum and Yoda Fountain and the popular bike path to the bridge).

It looks like the “Patriot Prayer” and “No Hatred S.F ” rallies are scheduled to overlap at Crissy Field on Saturday, while a “No Marxism in Berkeley” rally and a counter-protest to march to the site of that rally will be going on in Berkeley.

Unless visitors specifically want to participate in these events, study your maps, plan your activities for other places, and come here to ask locals for advice about travel around the City.

Muni, the local transit agency, has not issued any service alerts or route changes because of the Crissy Field gatherings. In case of marathons, parades, street fairs, etc., they often post alerts in advance. Check again in a day or two and see if anything shows up.

It’s an inconvenience for many and a burden on police, but it’s a principle of constitutional law that you can’t grant free speech to one without granting it to all – and you can’t grant it to all and then snatch it back from one. Local officials’ worry about public safety, while valid, isn’t valid enough to snatch it back from anyone, nor is general public loathing of any given cause. If you yank it once, where do you draw the line in the future: at an abortion rights rally because known clinic bombers MIGHT be coming to protest, at an LGBT parade because of RUMORS that violent anti-gay protests MAY happen, at a conservative religious revival because it COULD make leftwing radicals mad enough to attack them? The S.F. Police Officers’ Assn. buys radio time to talk about the duties and responsibilities of policing the City, and they often say they are bound by the law to protect the First Amendment rights and the safety of all San Franciscans – and they can expect to work hard for their wages this weekend.

The situation at the Presidio is even more complicated than normal because it is National Park Service land surrounded by the city, so you have different jurisdictions, different rules/laws and different law enforcement personnel.

Got this email from Sports Basement just now...

We did all our camping/backpacking shopping there just a few weeks ago.

~~~~~~~
To our customers:
This Saturday, August 26th, we will be closing our Presidio store due to the Patriot Prayer group rally. With expectations of a highly charged atmosphere, the safety of our staff and customers is our first priority.
Access to the Crissy Field area will be severely restricted on Saturday. Vehicle and bicycle access will not be permitted and all visitors will need to enter through the Marina gate, where there will be screening for weapons and other banned items. Unless attending the rally, we recommend avoiding the area as congestion is expected to be high.
Our Presidio store will be open regular hours on Friday and Sunday. Our Bryant Street store will be open normal hours on Saturday.
At Sports Basement, we cherish diversity -- diversity of thought, diversity of experience and background, diversity of race, religion, gender, and sexual orientation.
Thank you for all your support.
CEO, Sports Basement
Many people opt not to attend due to potential issues - and police requests. I'd post views online (as I have) & include that you didn't attend. Instead, you enjoyed the day seeing beautiful San Francisco and eating wonderful food. Note: sourdough toast is so good! My two cents.
I am going to guess there will be many tourists who would have no idea as they try to bike along the water to Golden Gate Bridge. Will be messy. Sounds like the only way in will be via the Marina Gate to the Presidio. I hope the bike rental places will warn people.
I hope enough people tune in to at least an occasional news broadcast while on vacation so they know things are happening. We all know that people on vacation can often be oblivious to RL, because they are having a good time & nothing can go wrong (which is why they get mugged at Twin Peaks, have their car burglarized in the Pier 39 garage, or fall over a waterfall into the Merced River). Folks have to realize that they may leave their own world for awhile on vacation, but they don't get to leave The World behind, & that world still has stuff going on that can impact them.
So yes, let's hope visitors will either be informed because they make an effort to be, or knowledgeable locals will clue them in.
Sourdough toast is great! It's terrific as garlic toast or French toast, dipped in soup or chili, warmed and buttered with some marmalade or jam, or just buttered. :^P
You haven't had the true San Francisco experience unless you've been involved in a protest or riot.
Well as long as it is safe simba. We were in downtown a few years ago during the Occupy protest that locked down the old Apple Store near Market during Black Friday. Scary and no fun.
Agree - its a good day to take a trip out of San Francisco such as wine country, the coast, Santa Cruz, etc, if you do not want to be caught up in these types of possibly violent protests.
Hopefully it does not turn violent but given clashes such as Berkeley, etc. its quite possible.
Just a suggestion in case you are visiting and wonder what to do.
