11 hours!!

Hi, we are leaving the UK on Sunday 26th November for 5 nights in Las Vegas. On Thursday 30th November we are flying at 6am up to San Francisco - we are planning to get the BART from the airport to Powell street then the street car over to fisherman’s wharf. We have Alcatraz booked for 12pm. Our flight back to LV is 7pm. Can anyone recommend anywhere to be included or a better way to manage our precious time in such an amazing city?? Thank you. Any comments/advice will be appreciated

Lyndsey

Ok, doesn’t really help. We love Vegas and is so much cheaper to get to from UK than SF Direct so decided to do what we have done.

Uber would cost around double than transport planned but thanks for response, it won’t suit us.

Yea Goodbeer... this flying to LA or SF as a day trip from an extended Vegas stay seems to be "a thing" with many Brits.

Lyndsey - what airline are you using? If with Southwest, see if you can get the latest flight back to Vegas to extend your stay. That would give you more time. Getting back to the airport for a 7pm flight means going through commute traffic. You should use BART to get back to the airport. But use Uber or Lyft to get around the city. If you have not used either apps - download them now assuming you will have data. There are intro codes for both. Las Vegas airport for sure has intro discount for Lyft. Good to use in Vegas as well.

There is a top question about what to do on a layover which is essentially what you have.

Here are the threads - older but still relevant.

Take UberPool if you have two people or less. It will probably be about the same price as BART and faster, given the amount of time you have.

Are you sure? Do you know about the shared options? UberPool or Lyftline? Sometimes less than $10 to zip across town in 15 mins rather than a S-L-O-W slog through town on a bus.

You are limited with your time and really don't have all too much flexibility. An Uber was recommended but for some reason you mention "...it won't suit us"

You asked if there is a "...better way to manage our precious time..."

Are we missing something here? Are you looking for the cheapest but fastest way to get there and back?

I think you have your own idea of what you want to do and how you want to get around Perhaps you have been here before so please stick to your original plan

Good luck and have fun

Right, but you are flying from Vegas to SF anyway, so you're still spending the same amount of money, why not spend a night or even two in SF?

I don't think we will convince Lindsey to stay a night in SF. But there are ways to maximize their time here. At least they do not want to do seaplane and Alcatraz on the same day. (we have had folks who asked and did do that on a "day trip" from Vegas more than once. The most recent report told us SF was amazing and they will actually spend a night here next time)

Let us know if you need more specifics Lindsey.

BART from the airport will work fine, and you will avoid any traffic coming into the city. BART drops you at Powell St and what you likely want to do from here is get a cable car (not a street car) to Fishermans Wharf. The cable car is the iconic one that is pulled over the hills by an underground cable. This costs $7 per person and has huge lines/queues during the day, so 8am or whatever time you arrive will be a good time to do it. If you are planning to travel by bus and cable car etc (this option is not great for the short amount of time you have) then you can buy an all-day Muni pass in Walgreens which includes the cable car and all buses/street cars within the city (but not the BART).
