Best time to visit

I would like some advise regarding the best time to visit San Francisco and surrounding area. We would be using San Francisco as a base. We are planning a ten day trip.

Any time is good. It gets better or worse if you're trying to catch or avoid something specific like a baseball game.

Try not to go anywhere during rush hour.

Lodging in wine country is generally cheaper and more available on weekdays from late fall through early spring.

As far as weather goes, locals prefer spring and fall.... unfortunately, there's no way of predicting exactly when that will be! Generally, the weather in April and May is mild (although may be rainy), and the warmest, clearest weather is in late September/early October. We'll usually have a stretch of 2-3 weeks of nice weather during those times.

Summer is one of the foggiest times to visit, and frequently the Golden Gate Bridge is obscured. Our summer weather forecast is remarkably consistent... "low clouds and fog along the coast, late nights and early mornings. Clearing mid-day. Highs in the mid to high 60s."

And assuming you'll have a car, be aware that most SF hotels and motels charge for parking (there are exceptions, but generally not in the Union Square/Fisherman's Wharf areas).

By the way, I forgot to mention that the weather is VERY localized. Even when SF is 65 and foggy, the wine country can be 90+ and sunny! Dress in layers!

CatharineB asked about «the best time to visit San Francisco . . . We are planning a ten day trip.»

The best time to visit is when you have at least nine days. You do so we'll welcome you:

The "Don't-miss SIGHTS in San Francisco" page geocities.com/iconoc/Articles/Sights.html has enough to keep you busy for nine 12.7-hour days. It includes links to your best sources of advice on WHERE TO EAT and, according to the Department of Health, WHERE TO NOT EAT here, the UseNet Group ba.food, and the quite-good sfSurvey and the comprehensive Yelp. It also has a WEATHER CHART with a link to current conditions.

They're the only seasons we have.

«.... unfortunately, there's no way of predicting exactly when that will be!»

Of course there is! Autumn and Standard Time run together as do Spring and Daylight Saving Time, give or take a day or few.

According to SFSusanW, July and August «weather forecast is remarkably consistent... "low clouds and fog along the coast, late nights and early mornings. Clearing mid-day. Highs in the mid to high 60s."»

¡Brava!

My friend SFSusanW can, because she's an immigrant, be forgiven for the confusing «the weather is VERY localized. Even when SF is 65 and foggy, the wine country can be 90+ and sunny!»

The wine country is very far away. In fact, Napa and Sonoma counties share no land borders with San Francisco, i.e., you have to go through other counties t'git t'them. The Weather Chart to which reference is made in the first URL above is introduced thus: "San Francisco has about nine CLIMATEs. Seacliff, where the idle rich live, has the worst; Dogpatch, where the working poor live, has the best. We NEVER go out without carrying a sweater or jacket and you shouldn't. Those you see covered in goose pimples shivering in their shorts are those at whom we laugh not for their misery but for their arrogance in rejecting the advice we know they, and you, received."

What she meant to say is that when the Sunset and Richmond are cold and foggy, Downtown could be in the low 70sF, The Mission in the high 70sF, and Potrero Hill, and even the Portolá neighborhood, in the low 80sF.

My favorite time of year in the SF area would be the last week of Sept and the first two of October. I love visitng wine coutry as the leaves turn and the weather in the city is usually decent that time of year. ALso, the season is in full swing with lots of cultural activities to enjoy.

I am also not much into the cold fogs of an SF summer, or do I enjoy the high temps in the surrounding areas that time of year.

cura_teen05, who's not reat the thread, asked «how is the weather in late december/early january??»

The following answer appeared earlier under this subject: The "Don't-miss SIGHTS in San Francisco" page geocities.com/iconoc/Articles/Sights.html has enough to keep you busy for nine 12.7-hour days. Best time to visit is when it is not foggy! As SFSusan says above, we were there last summer for 3 days and never did see the bridge for the fog. We did drive across the bridge which was an adventure. And SF was 15-20 degrees colder than anywhere else we went in California. Sounds like summer was not the best time to visit......but still glad we did it!
